Can I sujest Akbars in the center of Leeds. They do a fine curry.... if you do have to get there early becuase they don't take reservations and they do fill up fast.

Or if your suffering from a cash flow problem, 'The Grove' in the middle of student land. £5-6 for a curry that's very nice. Me and [livejournal.com profile] waistcoatmark have debated the merits of the Grove vs his favourite 'the hayes tandorai' many times. And I will admit that the Hayes in nicer, it's three times the price and not three times as nice.... Oh and the Grove will not serve booze, nor are you allowed to take any in, and nor will you be served if you a drunk.

I'll grant you this is less then useful but i wanted to take part...

May I then, in turn recommend The Kashmir in Sheffield. Sometimes the food is a little too salty, but otherwise generally superb. It's one of those 'no frills, just good food at low prices' kind of places.

Also the Nirmal in Sheffield, if you want considerably more classy surroundings and slightly less good (but still excellent) food.

Also the Mumtaz in Bradford. It's been awarded best curry house in UK type awards and deservedly so.

Also the 3 Monkeys in London, which is expensive but actually good.

Also Cafe Lazeez in London which does modern fusion Indian cuisine as well as traditional dishes.

I shall try and remember these recomendations.

I think I've eaten in Mumtaz and I don't think I was that impressed, although that might have been my choice of dish (a chicken tika) as everybody else seem to think it was fantastic.

I've only eaten there a few times, and it seemes to be a little variable. Quality does seems to go down a bit when they're very busy.

Also the Dilshad in Birmingham, which has been consistently excellent in probably 6-8 visits over 6-8 years, and is conveniently within extended walking distance of the part of the University of Birmingham where one of my favourite games conventions takes place.

Oh yes, Akbar's is great (if that's the one opposite the cinema/leisure complex on the road out to Kirkstall abbey?) Oh happy Yorkshire days, when I was missing many mates but at least could stuff myself with muchos curry....

BTW, I'm a Star of Asia fan, partly cos their food is yummy, but also for the proprieter Hass and his turban with comedy elastic to hold it on (and his penchant for giving regulars free beer and flaming sambukkas)

The Moonlight tandoori; had it once, got food poisoning!

I think your thinking of Azram's, which is also a good curry house.

Akbars is in the heart of town and fairly new (opposite Shabab's if that helps pin point it). They do the most monsterous Nans which they bring out and impale on a metal stand......
