Or possibly Akash. For some utterly inexplicable reason I have trouble working out which is which.

A little bit off the Cowley Road, and my info is several years out of date... Have you ever tried the Raj? On St Clements, almost opposite the Half Moon. I used to love taking vegetarians in there, as the menu had so much choice on it, and it was all very yummy. Couldn't comment on the meat options though.
And I haven't been there for about 3 years either...

I'm not sure whether I've ever been to any of the others besides the Moonlight. I may have done. Wasn't paying attention, I guess.

(You forgot the "Why are you asking me? You know I'm useless!" option :)

The Bombay Spice (?) opposite the Elm Tree is quite good and last I checked did a reasonably-priced all-you-can-eat on Tuesday nights which used to be ideal for pre-Temple Bar stuffage.

May I invite your LJ readers to add their curry knowledge to the community-created Oxford Guide Wiki, specifically in the Indian Food category? It's a little empty at the moment.

Currently remembered curry's on the Cowley Road are.

The Moonlight: Went as a group for my birthday this year. Nice enough though a little lacking in atmosphere. Wasn't entirely impressed with the food, though I can't actually remember why.

The Aziz: Went for a friday evening meal with Kathy. Good food, not bad service atmosphere let down by a large blokey (stag?) group being loud and making conversation difficult.

Can I sujest Akbars in the center of Leeds. They do a fine curry.... if you do have to get there early becuase they don't take reservations and they do fill up fast.

Or if your suffering from a cash flow problem, 'The Grove' in the middle of student land. £5-6 for a curry that's very nice. Me and [livejournal.com profile] waistcoatmark have debated the merits of the Grove vs his favourite 'the hayes tandorai' many times. And I will admit that the Hayes in nicer, it's three times the price and not three times as nice.... Oh and the Grove will not serve booze, nor are you allowed to take any in, and nor will you be served if you a drunk.

I'll grant you this is less then useful but i wanted to take part...

Well 8 or so years ago, Moonlight was our normal choice. The "large white one" near Randolph St. was also quite nice from what I recall. There was (and maybe still is) a small grubby one also nearby Randolph St. which my housemates at the time found so unpleasant that they refused to ever go there again (I believe they referred to one of the dishes they got as "bone curry").

Near the police station is not bad food-wise, as I recall, and (more importantly) one of the girls from the Middle Eastern Dance Society dances there, so it's definitely worth a trip. ;)

I've voted assuming that by "best" you mean "nicest food", but for a more detailed response:

Aziz: Nicest food as long as you're not vegetarian.
Moonlight: Best value.
Prince: Best veggie stuff. (It shut ? Bah !)
Star of Asia: Nicest staff. (Also shut, IIRC)

Favourite Curry experience: Star of Asia.

Nicest curry: Akash

Oxford info at least 4 years out of date, and biased by rose-tinted spectacles.

Favourite Curry place in W. Yorkshire (since the theme's developed) Last Viceroy in Horsforth. Even bumped into Jack Charlton there once.

...and the Roti in a former car showroom in Pontefract. Kashmiri basically and, on my last visit, they'd added Persian. Kitchens are right on view, too.

Now, I really really want curry, especially given my body is still dealing with last night's alcohol....

I would like to give an Honourable Mention to the one that is about four doors up from the Moonlight Tandoori that I think is called the Kashmir Halal, particularly recommending two dishes: chicken tandoori soup and banana lassi. Two visits in the last five years (last one either this year or last), both excellent.
