A quick advert: a few times, people have said to me that they'd love to try rapper dancing, but that they're a bit scared because they're never done anything like it and they'll be crap. At the moment we have a few new people starting with Mabel Gubbins, and at least one of them has never even seen rapper dancing before. So, if you're female[*], and in Oxfordshire-ish, and you've ever thought you might like to give it a try, now would be a really great time - we'll[**] be teaching everything from the absolute basics.

http://mabelgubbins.co.uk

Practices are Tuesday evenings 8pm - 9pm for beginners (hardcore Mabels stay til 10pm), in Brightwell-cum-Sotwell.

[*] If you're male, and in Londonish, try Thrales. They're very welcoming of beginners. I can try and offer suggestions of other teams if neither of these suits.
[**] Where by "we" I apparently mean "I" - think I blinked at a critical moment at the AGM :(

Wow. It's very exciting. At least, it is if you're me. For the first time that I've ever noticed, Jez Lowe is playing in London. On Friday.

And he's bringing the Bad Pennies with him.

And it's in King's Place, which is a lovely venue.

Jez Lowe is a traditional-sounding folk songwriter from the North East. If - like me - you grew up hanging out in folk clubs in Durham then you will have slowly spent your life discovering that half the songs you thought were traditional were actually written by him.

I think his best-known song is probably Greek Lightning, though it's one I only met relatively recently. Annoyingly, YouTube doesn't seem to want to furnish me with the (rather dafter) song I wanted to link to, about a dog that wouldn't bark.

Anyway, if you like good song-writing, folk-style music, or stripey t-shirts I highly recommend it. Tickets available from here.

At least once a week, I trundle straight from work onto a train and head off to a dance practice. Being the sort of person who likes meals at nice regular intervals, I pick something up in the station as I pass through. A few years ago, that basically meant Burger King or Upper Crust. These days there are the heady alternatives of M&S Food and Subway. My default choice for some time has been Subway, because it's hot (ie more like a meal, in my book), made from something at least resembling real food, and inexpensive.

For ages, I've been wondering why stations never sell proper, reasonably healthy, takeaway meals - a bowl of rice and curry, a bowl of pasta, a plate of noodles... sometimes you can get soup, but the UK's highstreets are mostly very low on decent street-food options.

Blimey. Now that I don't share a house with Frances any more, these things sneak up on me...

She's got another book out

I know virtually nothing about it, but it's pretty much bound to be brilliant. The last four were ;)

A friend of mine does PR for Yeo Valley, who make yoghurts. Or maybe she does blogging and copywriting for them. Or some form of other freelance stuff. Actually, I concede, I have no idea what it is she actually does for them. The net result, as far as I'm concerned, is that she sporadically wants me to go to her house and eat yoghurt and have opinions about it.

As a big fan of both yoghurt and having opinions, I quite enjoy it.

Lemon and ginger yoghurt? Genius )

When the news this morning announced that Barclays Bank was embarking on a "fundraising programme", did anyone else immediately envisage an extensive, nationwide outbreak of coffee mornings, raffles and fun-runs ?

In other news, a friend of mine is trying to flog a pair of Bon Jovi tickets for "this weekend" (presumably Twickenham, but I don't know which day). If anyone might be interested in buying them, they should let me know.

I think most of the Cambridge people who read this have actually moved, but just in case...

A while back I wrote about going to see The Book Of Job: The Musical, which I enjoyed immensely. There's a performance of it in Trinity College on Sunday night, and anyone who wants an entertaining evening for a few quid (and isn't offended by people ripping the mickey out of the Bible) should go and see it.

I'm afraid I don't have more details like times or anything useful, but presumably Trinity could supply them if required. We think it might be here.
