Can anyone confirm/deny the continued existence of the Heathrow/Gatwick Tube ? Looking online for it last night, I couldn't find anything about it, let alone a timetable.

The airline bus (the blue one) which now runs has timetables on line (did it replace the Tube ?), but sadly they weren't very obliging. If someone in Oxford wants to be in Gatwick for 7am, they can either catch the 5:15 bus and be late, or catch the 4am bus and be stupidly early.

All of which explains why, by 7am this morning, I was already driving back round the M25, boogying to Walk of Life. Well, all right, nothing really explains the Dire Straits.

I love the smell of benzine in the morning.

Its the Heathrow Express, it still exists, and still runs the way it used to.

Dunno about gatwick, though vague memory of seeing it (the bus, not the airport!) at the bus station suggests it is still about.

Hmm. You don't know of its website offhand, do you ? I thought it was run by the Tube people (even if it's not called that), but the Tube website deals exclusively with the Oxford->Central London one.

No, that's the airline bus. I want the red one.

Oh! You're right, it does have a blip around midnight-4am, contrary to their advertising. Poot. In that case, no, you're screwed, since that is the only Heathrow-Oxford bus.

Again, can't speak for Gatwick.

Ah - so the Heathrow Express is the same, blue, airline bus I'm talking about ? And the Tube-like one no longer exists ?

Bum.

Oh, that's the one you're talking about. Yup, there's an hour and a quarter between the buses. Sucks, dunnit?

The airline bus is run by the Oxford bus company, and replaces the X70. That's the one I've always got to Heathrow.

The Oxford tube is run by Stagecoach: http://www.stagecoach-oxford.co.uk/oxfordtube/ and has no mention of airport services. So I suspect that you're stuffed.

Er, yeah, I knew all of that stuff, that's why I was appealing for people with actual experience of the buses recently to speak up :)

Ah, I was interpreting your initial explanation to mean you hadn't found the Oxford tube site.

Look, it's early, alright? Go back to sleep. Or better yet, let me go back to sleep. I've got a headache already. Need caffeine. Waaah...

As far as I know it has always been 1 hour+ between buses in the middle of the night. Certainly it has been every time I've wanted one.

I wasn't grumbling about the time between coaches, more commenting as an aside that the particular times at which they were running was inconvenient in this case.

If there were two bus services running to Gatwick, it'd suggest that coaches might be more regularly available, which is why I was looking for the other service.

The other alternative might be just to get any of the usual buses into Victoria, and hook up with the Gatwick Express, which runs all night; every 30 minutes, I think. Probably costs more, though.

There is also National Express but they don't go any more often. http://www.nationalexpress.com/nxairport/home.cfm

There is also a direct rail link between Reading and Gatwick which apparently turns into a luxury coach at night. Sort of like a pumpkin I guess.

Like the pumpkin carriage in Cinderella.

Marvellous, we now have many many photos.
Some of them don't have ice in.

I'm afraid I know nothing about Heathrow/Gatwick Tubes, but I just wanted to say thanks for the Earworm Of The Day.

We're talking The Motors, aren't we?
"Dancing the night away" doomp-doomp
"Dancing the night away"
Am I close, or in totally the wrong universe?

Yup. Well, we were talking Airport, by The Motors. But you can sing Dancing The Night Away if you wish :)

(I can't because I don't know the words well enough. Dum dum dum dum, dum dum dum dum dum, taking the band on the road. )

Ha! Airport by The Motors is the greatest song ever created in my oh-so-humble opinion. Tao insiders will note that I nominated it for the first TTWICM compilation. Good to see it getting quoted here.

Regrettably most of their other stuff, Dancing The Night Away included, impressed me less.

From: [identity profile] venta.livejournal.com
Indeed, I just popped back to TTWICM to have a listen to it :)

Incidentally, do you have any idea why Rat might be absolutely dog slow ? I know it's likely to be busy, but I can't even listen to a single track off it - just get buffering errors. Is this just me distorting technology again ? Onebyone doesn't seem to be having problems with it, cos I asked.

I think it's running on _really_ underpowered hardware. I dunno why some people are ok and not others, though. Maybe Rat is just Vindictive and Nasty. Failing that, you could get the secret copies off iweb or a CD from the library (if they're all out, Jay has one as well).

For the benefit of non-Tao'ers, we should probably take this thread to regular email!

So. Today:

Rat hates me. Dan's machine hates me. The stuff I'm working on hates me. Vodafone, Evesham and HMV, in their individual ways, all hate me.

I think I'll go and eat worms.

I don't hate you. I expect that's quite a comfort, at least. :-)

I remembered that. Except that I didn't know you were him, so to speak.

Another one to add to my collection !
