Its okay my phone keeps getting my sister and my stalker confused!!! No idea why (other than the first 5 numbers of their phone numbers being the same) or what I acn do about it.

I'm not familiar with Nokiae, having never used one til Saturday. This one seems to have the persistent randomly-reorder-the-text-messages-in-your-Inbox feature. Which keeps life entertaining.

I think their main agenda is to sort the texts in your inbox by date, so that the older ones remain at the top... except for ones you haven't read at all yet, which come out above the older ones (until you've read them, when they sink to the bottom of the list as mere newbies). If that makes any sense, anyway...

I liked my old Nokia lots and lots, but I'm gradually getting used to my new Sagem. It went up a long way in my estimations when I started playing with the 'record your own ringtone' feature. I recorded my Mum saying 'Answer the phone, Penny!' in a deliberately short-tempered manner, and set it up to use that sound-bite as a ring-tone whenever she rang me (and also show a picture of her and my Dad on the screen). Later that day she did ring, and I found it very amusing to be shouted at by my mother from my pocket. Could wear thin after a while, though...

Yeah, I thought that for a while, too :) Sort by date, with unread at the top would at least be coherent, if not what I'd prefer. But it seems to be:

Unread messages.
Messages stored on the SIM (when the SIM was put in from my old phone), in whatever damn order it feels like.
Messages which arrived to this phone and have been read, in whatever damn order it feels like.

It certainly isn't date order, or reverse date, or alphabetical-by-sender, or anything useful.

I never had the stored on SIM vs. sent to phone issue, as my Nokia was my first phone, so there were no texts to import from an old SIM. That means all my messages were covered by your 1st and 3rd categories. But I still feel the third category was sorted according to some kind of principle, and it seemed like reverse date order to me. Maybe it'll get more logical once you only have messages on there which were sent to the current phone? Or maybe your old one will be mended by then, so you won't have to suffer the Nokia's peculiarities any more? ;)

Me too. Well, not your old Nokia, but mine.

Then I went and 'upgraded' to a Sony Ericsson. I chose it 'cos it was smallish and tri-band. And I figured Sony stuff is usually pretty good. This phone however sucks great big... er... well, something pretty big and sucky.

So many things about it suck, from the ease with which it seems to turn itself off and on again (thus circumventing the key lock and phoning random people while in my pocket) to the shabby phonebook interface that requires me to press more than 5 keys to get to a particular number if I want to send an SMS, to the ludicrousness of the little joystick being used to select a word from the predictive text list, *and* space *and* send the message.

Grr.

Shoddy design.

I'll probably get a Nokia again next time.

Or maybe I'll finally overcome my odd aversion to flippy-open phones.

Didn't you have a T68i ? I had one of those and loved it dearly... though I had to replace it because it didn't take kindly to being dropped onto a composite floor from a great height.

My current phone (wot is being repaired) is a Motorola V525, and has nearly been enough to send me screaming back to the phone shop offering them any amount of money so long as I can have a Sony Ericsson again.

Well, I suppose one bloke's phone-wot-sucks is another chick's phone-wot-is-dearly-loved.

When I next upgrade, if they don't offer me a stupid amount of money for handing it in, you can have it. The case is a little scratched, but the phone is in working order. I can't bring myself to say perfect working order considering how much I think it sucks.

Still... I think Motorola are worse. I used to have a StarTac... maybe that's what put me off flippy-open phones in the first place.

Every Motorola I've ever encountered has sucked rabidly. I didn't want one at all at all.

Mr Phone Shop told me that the interfaces of all Vodafones phones has been standardised, so I had no need to worry about a Motorola sucking as it would be the same interface as any other Vodafone phone. I queried this, as it sounded like a bunch of arse. He insisted it was true.

It's a bunch of arse, of course.

The one thing I really do like about my current phone is its flippy-open-ness. Means it's quite small while still having big buttons, which is lovely.

I'm not sure your phone is in working order if it switches itself off all the time - mine never did that once, and it lived its whole life in pockets. You might be right about the interface - however, trust me, it's better than this Motorola's, so I've probably got rosy memories of it. (I'd had limited experience of phones before getting the T68i, so might not be the best judge.)

I've got a Vodafone phone. It's a Sagem my V-65, which I believe you can *only* get from Vodafone: it's been customised specifically for them.

The interface sucks. If this is an example of their standardised interface, then they all suck.

(eg. Phone book: Press 2 to go to "A", 3 to go to "D" etc. If you are on "A", and you press 2, you... go to "A". My Seimens went to "B", and then "C". The fastest way to get to "Smith" in my Phone book is to press 8, for "T", and then scroll up. And that's just a mild example. T9... Don't start me on T-bloody-9! Teach it new words? Can you buggery? OOh. I've just checked. It knows how to spell that. Wow. First dubious word it's recognised!)

My old Nokia phone was lovely, but then I lost it and couldn't get another. So now I've got some Siemens (I think) gubbins. What I really want, though, is a proper bakelite mobile phone with a rotary dial and none of this texting nonsense.

Talking of people in phone shops talking a bunch of arse... I went to the Carphone Warehouse with

secretrebel at the weekend. One of her requirements was a phone that she could use to get an internet connection to her laptop, and the first guy we spoke to, on discovering that the laptop in question is a Mac, was terribly dismissive and claimed that you could only do that with some difficult to find and/or expensive software. I've successfully used my Sony Ericcson something-or-other with my Mac laptop to get an internet connection, and it worked fine, with no extra software at all, so I told him so, and he refused to believe me. And then, when he'd palmed us off on someone else, presumably because he thought we were difficult, the other guy almost sold her a contract with no GPRS at all, despite extensive discussion about that being something she wanted. It was only when we double-checked (as we thought) that it was possible that he admitted it wasn't. Gits.

I had one a few years ago and well it was quite a skill to use it. My current Nokia (a 6310i) is lovely.
