There's a little room for music
May. 26th, 2004 10:52 amEarlier in the year, I was sitting in a pub with some friends, and I noticed that the jukebox was playing a song which, to me, exactly suited the moment. Had I been writing a soundtrack for the evening, I'd have put that song there.
I decided to keep an eye out for this happening - not to try and fit songs to my mood, location, etc, but to wait for Serendipitous Soundtrack Moments to happen. Since then, they've all occurred when I was driving. So, here's my current list:
Pulling onto the road out of Oxford, heading to a friend's house in Sheffield. Sheff is one of my favourite places, and the sun was shining.
Barenaked Ladies - Hello City
Driving fast along tiny country roads, which I know well, as the first few flakes of snow began to fall.
The Auteurs - Lenny Valentino (Das Capital version)
Driving home, very late one night, up the M40. The road was deserted, I had the whole stretch of three-lane motorway to myself.
The Coral - Pass It On
A few months ago, someone put signs up round the Oxford ring road which said in large, black, block capitals "JUDGEMENT DAY IS COMING". I passed these signs, in absolutely ferocious sleet.
Looper - The Snare
And, on a not particularly related note, a lyrics question:
I want to know what you think are the earliest occurrences - in lyrics or otherwise - of the following phrases. Since this isn't a standard lyrics-quiz-style question, a phrase which is similar is also acceptable.
