Earlier in the year, I was sitting in a pub with some friends, and I noticed that the jukebox was playing a song which, to me, exactly suited the moment. Had I been writing a soundtrack for the evening, I'd have put that song there.

I decided to keep an eye out for this happening - not to try and fit songs to my mood, location, etc, but to wait for Serendipitous Soundtrack Moments to happen. Since then, they've all occurred when I was driving. So, here's my current list:

Pulling onto the road out of Oxford, heading to a friend's house in Sheffield. Sheff is one of my favourite places, and the sun was shining.

Barenaked Ladies - Hello City

Driving fast along tiny country roads, which I know well, as the first few flakes of snow began to fall.

The Auteurs - Lenny Valentino (Das Capital version)

Driving home, very late one night, up the M40. The road was deserted, I had the whole stretch of three-lane motorway to myself.

The Coral - Pass It On

A few months ago, someone put signs up round the Oxford ring road which said in large, black, block capitals "JUDGEMENT DAY IS COMING". I passed these signs, in absolutely ferocious sleet.

Looper - The Snare

And, on a not particularly related note, a lyrics question:

I want to know what you think are the earliest occurrences - in lyrics or otherwise - of the following phrases. Since this isn't a standard lyrics-quiz-style question, a phrase which is similar is also acceptable.

I once drove across the Dartford Bridge while the opening music to Hellraiser was on the stereo. The speed of the traffic somehow complemented the tempo of the music, and the slow unveiling of scenery as we gradually crested the bridge was also matched by the gradual increase in intensity and volume.

Also, a few weeks ago, the first hot Friday we had, as I was driving home, I was listening to some Dick Dale that I got from [livejournal.com profile] thecesspit. That too was a perfect marriage of music and moment; "Summer, and the weekend are here!"

Barenaked Ladies - Hello City

Which part was particularly appropriate:

"The same people, the same drinks and
The same music, the same quicksand"

or bearing in mind your previous Sheffield quiz, the Housemartins quote:

"Oh what a good place to be, don't believe them,
'cause they speak a different language,
and it's never been happy for me"?

What a fascinating idea! May there be many more happy coincidences to come. You didn't mention what the jukebox track was and I'm curious now, by the way.

I do like the way that your answers to #1 illustrates the fact that there is no consensus of opinion as to whether the band or the track name should be listed first when the two are listed, a dash apart from each other.

Ultimate Real World Sound Track moments.

Back in 1987, when I was wasting my life hanging out with stoners and reprobates (retro-bates?) around Cocoa Beach, Florida. We were riding in the back of my friend's well preserved VW Van, around 10:00 pm, looking forward to another night of wasted youth.

The Bridges between Cocoa Beach and Merritt Island were tall, simple concrete arches, built to accommodate inter-coastal barge traffic.

So, ramping up to the apex of the bridge, you have a definite "jet take off" feel, even in a lumbering old VW... Especially when you're in the back, and the only view is via the dual driver's windows, beyond a tunnel of illicit smoke. And the only thing you can see is sky, along with some clouds reflecting city lights.

It was at this moment, just as I felt the beginning of a bit of contact high, that my friend's mix tape switched over to Wagner's "Flight of the Valkyries", and I imagined, for a moment, that VW Vans had wings.
