And every time I try to go online, my 'puter non-negotiably shuts itself down because "a Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly".
I'm running Windows XP - does anyone have any ideas ?
(This was written in the 60 secs it gives me to close everything...)

However, googling for that text (with quotes, and without the leading "a") only produces about 500-odd hits, so maybe that'll give you a clue.
You have got the latest updates from Microsoft installed, haven't you (since a quick look implies it might be a kernel bug)?

Have a look at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=327148 which allegedly also applies to XP.
To replace system files with originals - use sfc /scannow - see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;310747
To prevent automatic reboot:
Within the 60 seconds go to Start > Run
Type "cmd" to get a command prompt
Type "shutdown -a" to abort the shutdown.
A security hotfix is also referenced http://www.microsoft.com/security/security_bulletins/ms03-026.asp

The information to abort the shutdown is especially useful. Otherwise is going to be damn hard to look at the links everyone else has cited :)
(If I look distressed at Intrusion, then I didn't manage to sort it out tonight!)

Anyone claiming to be me is a shocking impostor.
I'll be at home cataloguing my collection of cornflakes.

Apparently his gives him that message and then reboots after 60 seconds. My first thought was misregistered XP and MS doing evil things to you cos it thought you were a pirate. I may be wrong though.
