Why am I soft in the middle when the rest of my life is so hard?

Yesterday, I wrote:

Once I'd got there, I managed to get one hand badly caught in the swords, had a bunch of swords smacked off my head, and someone trod on my foot. For encore, I did some practice tumbles[*], and fell of and landed on my knees.

And found out that a friend broke his back earlier in the week.

Bah. Should have stayed at home.

[*] Backwards somersaults, with your hands supported by the shoulders of people either side of you.
