Come on, you anonymous commenters, own up! I'm all curious!

This is a slightly dual-purpose poll. I want to know what the best-known song (or songs) by each of these artists it. But in some cases, I also want to know how well-known the work of a particular artist acually is at all.

If you can name the band's entire back catalogue, then just tell me what you consider to be the best-known song(s). If you can only name one song, then put that down. If you can name a song, but don't actually know how it goes/have never heard it, then please indicate that, too.

There may be further installments to come as I think of more artists about whom I'm curious.

[Poll #501277]

Incidentally, your survey was sorely in need of a "Know the name, know his/her/their work well but don't happen to know the track names".

Track names, like lyrics, are of little importance to me and I often don't know them.

Also, offtopic: The mysterious Samantha-related comment was also me because I thought it would be amusing to see who you'd pin a potentially dodgy comment on. (I know, I'm a bad boy...)

Well, you're welcome to identify songs by comments like "the one that goes de-dum-de-dum and has that guitary bit just after the chorus, and featured a lap-dancing earwig in the video".

If you can't identify the song at all, then you're of no use to me :p

it would be amusing to see who you'd pin a potentially dodgy comment on

Well. I never thought of that explanation. I hope, at least, my puzzlement appeared genuine thus demonstating my innocence of any of this dodginess of which you speak :)

I am indeed no use.

But yes, your puzzlement not only established your purity, but was also quite entertaining.

Which reminds me: did you know there was a new Mötley Crüe compilation out, with three new tracks on it ? I believe they're touring again, too.

The last Crue album I bought was about 5 years ago and I was not impressed. I bought it at the same time as a Richie Blackmore solo albumn; which was equally bad. Still seeing Crue live could be entertaining, last time I saw them was at Donnington with: Queensryche, The Black Crowes, Metallica and ACDC.

Sorry about the obvious and stupid mistake. I've corrected it now.

Oh, aye.

To be honest, I noticed your first answer straight away and assumed you were making some witty observation that I hadn't quite worked out yet :)

No. I just read the one bandname as the other and didn't notice until I looked back later. Daft mistake, but there you go.

Of course, now I've read the other answers, I go "oh, yeah", but I presume you wanted answers from the top of one's head.

Er, yes please, definitely off-top-of-head!

At first I wrote down all the songs that came to the top of my head, but then I thought I'd misunderstood your poll and changed all my answers to what I thought would come to the top of other people's heads, which weren't the same. I hope that was right!

Er, yes, probably. Though if you had no idea about other people's heads, your own is better than nothing :)

My own first thought for a Dylan song was "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" - nice.

having looked at the poll results, i've now realised that i can name a bunch of songs by The Jam - but had thought they were all by The Clash !

am wondering how many of the people who've watched "Strange Days" realise that all of the songs sung by the female lead are PJ Harvey covers ?

Hallelujah! I'm not alone in my embarrassing confusion! Although due to repeated bludgeoning by my long-suffering husband, my ability to correctly identify tack title and artist is slowly improving...

Bah, I expended great mental effort selecting only one song by each, cunningly not noticing the "(s)"s...

(That last word(?) is almost as difficult to say as to punctuate.)

I also missed the (s). Although it would only really have made a difference for the Beautiful South.

I tend to have knowledge of exactly 1 song by any given artist, as a general rule. My memory has musical 'hooks' that I hang my knowledge off - e.g. Del Amitri to me is 'Last to know'. Extrapolating from that, I can usually/sometimes recognise a Del Amitri track when I hear it, and dint of repetition will drive the title into my memory, thus I can also point to 'Roll to me' and 'Master & Servant'.

This applies to nearly everything I listen to, with the exception of the few albums I've heard so often that my title recognition is significantly better. Artists on that list are Eurythmics, Squeeze, Queen, Meatloaf (usually), Tori Amos and U2. There's a couple of bands and artists that I'm hit-and-miss on that get the 'Damn, I know this, now what the hell is it?' reaction - mostly differentiating between Bryan Adams, Bon Jovi, Springsteen and other people that sing and play guitars.

In general though, I won't have a clue about music, which will make Darrell roll his eyes yet again at my apparent stupidity.

Aw man, I clearly know nothing about music. :-/

No idea how to answer the "best known song" question, especially. Most of the time I don't know what the best known song is, I just know what I know (and what I like!).
