They'll none of them be missed
Jul. 15th, 2004 10:29 amHaving promised my housemate that I'd take him to the pictures if he was good, I went to see Shrek 2 again last night.
And between us, we started a list of references to other films contained therein. Anyone else want to join in ?
Specific films referenced (rather than use of generic movie clichés):
Arriving in Far, Far Away - Beverley Hills Cop
Fairy Godmother singing - The Fabulous Baker Boys
A giant, stupid thing called Mungo - Blazing Saddles
Three friends (including a fencing Spaniard) planning to storm the castle to prevent the Princess ending up with the wrong bloke - The Princess Bride
Puss carving 'P' on a tree - The Mask Of Zorro
The final scene of people dancing on the stage - The Fifth Element
Some of these I only have Andy's word for, as I haven't seen the films in question.

Date: 2004-07-15 02:42 am (UTC)I know there's hordes more but damned if I can think of any. I'll get back to you.

Date: 2004-07-15 02:43 am (UTC)I have seen exactly 0.000005% of the films you could reasonably expect me to have seen (not including that one), and thus can't work it out for myself :(

Date: 2004-07-15 03:02 am (UTC)Brain Shot not a movie, it's more a state of my curernt mind.
So basically, 'I'm brain Shot and unable to think of any but i know they are there.... ' of coruse equally the phrase "brain shot unable to right clearly would be equally true'...
Sorry for the confusion. But

Date: 2004-07-15 03:19 am (UTC)Well, I'm sure most educated people would have known there wasn't a film called Brain Shot :)
I was doing a film-quiz with some people from work, which was done with cryptic clues. Kept having conversations like:
Me: Hmmm. A Star and a Man ? Star Man.
Sysadmin#1: Yes
Me: What ?
S: Starman
Me: Eh ? There's a film called Starman ?
S: Yes!

Date: 2004-07-15 03:00 am (UTC)2. Rolling around in the surf is from From Here To Eternity.
3. I'm fairly sure I saw Cimtiere and Lumiere from Beauty And The Beast (Disney) in the Fairy Godmother making furniture dance sequence.
Arguably the huge Mungo thing also referenced Ghostbusters.
There was quite a few more, but I'll have to see it again.

Date: 2004-07-15 03:15 am (UTC)Ah, not sure I've ever seen Beauty and the Beast. I had wondered about the (sp?) Substitutionary Locomotion sequence from Mary Poppins with the dancing furniture, though.

Date: 2004-07-15 03:15 am (UTC)The whole dive under a door, oops, I forgot my hat routine gets done again.
The on-the-spot commentator at the start of the ball mentioned something along the lines of "the abs are fab".
Oh, and the bucket of water over Puss in the middle of the song is Flashdance.

What's that referring to ?
Oh, and the bucket of water over Puss in the middle of the song is Flashdance.
Aha! I knew I recognised it from somewhere, really couldn't place it, though.

Date: 2004-07-15 03:19 am (UTC)Doors and hats, I'd think is probably first in Raiders of the Lost Ark. But it's been redone so many times, I've lost track.

Date: 2004-07-15 03:21 am (UTC)Eh ?
But it's been redone so many times, I've lost track.
Well, it's going in the forbidden "generic movie clichés" bin unless you can cite a definitive example.
Don't ask me, I still haven't bloody seen Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Oh, alright. Raiders. Definitively ;-)

Date: 2004-07-15 06:42 am (UTC)Grabbing that hat just before a door closes is in at least one of the films, possibly more.

Date: 2004-07-15 03:57 am (UTC)The whole hat/door thing is from either Raiders of the Lost Ark or Temple of Doom but I can't recall which one right now.
I'd agree that the giant gingerbread man was more of a nod to Ghostbusters rather than anything else. But perhaps it's both.
There's also a reference to the Graduate (or, if you prefer, Mike Myers in Wayne's World 2, but that's from much the same origin).
The Little Mermaid being thrown back in and eaten by a shark, and two of the potion factory workers being transformed into animated objects from Beauty and the Beast were the two obvious swipes at Disney that I spotted. There are a couple of less obvious ones - a poster taking off Lilo and Stitch for instance.
Mission Impossible for the whole Pinnochio lying (or not) scene.
There's an obvious Alien reference when Puss jumps out of a shirt.
E.T. too, as Mungo dissolves/dies and tells little gingerbread man to 'be good'.
The axe being given to the king being held up against the full moon suggests Batman and the bat signal to me.
And not a movie, but the OJ Simpson car chase is referenced in the aerial chase for Donkey as a big white horse (or bronco). Simpson's car was a large white Bronco.
The king is Basil Fawlty, almost to a tee. The old war/crusade wound for starters.
Sound of Music, near the beginning, with Shrek and Fiona running through the fields of flowers.
I'm quite sure there's more, but I've only seen it the once so far, and that was a while back on preview before it came out nationwide.

I mean what's the reference - I've not see The Graduate (though I have seen Wayne's World :)

I forgot that in my original list.

Date: 2004-07-15 04:24 am (UTC)At the beginning of the movie when they get attacked by bandits and shrek is dangling upside down by his foot fiona does a spinning bird kick (chun-li move) followed by a dragon punch (streetfighter signature move as used by ken and ryu) on the last guy.
I think this is a game that will best be played as a drinking game when the DVD comes out.
Whenever you spot a reference you shout it out and as long as you are right everybody takes a drink. If everybody thinks you're a muppet you down your drink.
Perhaps that might be a little too dnagerous though. :)

Date: 2004-07-15 06:47 am (UTC)Also, I was getting a bit of a feeling of the Godzilla remake during the rest of that scene, but I haven't seen the movie, only trailers. It might just be that one giant monster rampaging around in a city is very much like another rather than because any particular shot was a match.

and
was Donkey just singing Rawhide or does the riding off in the back of the wagon happen? I haven't really seen any.
Walking through the potion factory wheeling a trolley being casual looked like Monsters Inc to me.
And does one of the fairy tale books tossed of the shelf being Pretty Woman count as a film reference?
