After a somewhat fraught experience of trying to download iTunes and get it to behave sensibly (and thankyou [livejournal.com profile] zandev for the assistance), I've now got a copy of Bam Thwok, the new Pixies' single.

And, y'know, I rather like it. Sounds like the Pixies - but not enough to make me think they've not evolved at all in the last fifteen years. The trademark guitars and slightly spiky vocals are still there, but seem somehow mellower. It's a good song for summer. Though I must admit, while I like the organ solo, it fits rather oddly into the song.

Anyone else heard it, and got any opinions ?

Only from iTunes, eh? Well, that's me SOL unless I buy a Mac or Windows box specially.

It's nice to hear that it's good, though. Maybe it'll be out in some other form eventually.

Apparently iTunes will let me burn an audio CD with it on, so I could manage a (potentially low quality) mp3 for you ?

I mean, hypothetically I could, if I were that sort of dodgy type.

Thinking about it, if I had to liken it to the sound of an existing album, I'd say Trompe Le Monde.

So if you're in the TLM-sucks-goats-and-should-never-have-been camp (which seems to be surprisingly large), you may wish to disagree violently.

TLM was disappointing as a Pixies album, but was still a very good record. With the exception of their version of Head On, which I actually do think they shouldn't have bothered recording.

Entirely hypothetically an mp3 would be nice. The opportunity to buy a copy will hopefuly arise at some point, but it would be a pleasing stopgap.

I don't know what I'm doing soliciting more music, though. I picked up ten albums in a closing-down sale at the weekend, and there are at least another couple I'm going to buy before the month ends. It's getting silly. Siller. Whatever.

I hadn't realised until about three weeks ago that this was a cover - and I'm certainly not familiar with the original. (I'm not very well up on my J&MC)

It's odd how attitudes to cover versions alter depending on which one you met first. Liking an original[*] seems to pretty much rule out that you will like any covers of it, usually.

[*] Or what you believe to be the original. cf. The kid at Purgatory a few years ago asking whose the "dreadful cover" of Marilyn Manson's Sweet Dreams was...

Pixies' version of Head On doesn't really do anything worthwhile with the song.

It's odd how attitudes to cover versions alter depending on which one you met first.

Yes. There are a fair few I like more than one version of, but which you get to know does affect how you feel about ones you meet later.

asking whose the "dreadful cover" of Marilyn Manson's Sweet Dreams was...

Or the questions about Dead Souls and who it was that was covering Nine Inch Nails songs.

any song that can use the line 'wakka wakka' and not sound like a rubbish muppets homage deserves respect in and of itself. Aside from that, yeah, I quite like it.

Hmmm, I have yet to try using iTunes for downloads (as it hasn't been live). I think I will have to just not use it for a while as otherwise things could get silly ; )

On another note, I notice you're listening to Xfm (at work I presume). Might I suggest 6music via your computer? Only, that's the station what plays bands like to pixies, them that 'covered' NIN, etc. etc.

them that 'covered' NIN

I'm not actually sure who you're meaning there - I can think of several fine NIN covers :)

Yes, I listen to Xfm streaming, mostly because it plays me new bands I'm not already familiar with. Unfortunately, owing to close proximity to a very noisy aircon unit, I'm unlikely to be listening to much until summer goes away.
