Well, today was an exciting post day.

Today I received through the letter box:
A parcel from [livejournal.com profile] spindlemere containing a CD he was passing from [livejournal.com profile] addedentry to me. After a failure on both our parts to actually exchange the thing, he'd given up and consigned it to the postal service. So that's one copy of The Auteurs vs. ยต-Ziq to go on the to-listen-to pile, and thanks to all involved.

A parcel from [livejournal.com profile] davefish containing a Scary Bitches album. He's obviously heard that my music collection is just too damn sensible, and is on course to liven it up a little.

Then when I got to work, a parcel had arrived from Amazon bringing me albums by Baader Meinhof (thought it was time I bought a proper copy), Sigur Ros (already a hot contender for Sleevenotes of the Year award) and Adam Green (colour printing, tsk). And the Bloc Party single.

So lots of lovely new things for me. Hurrah.

And while I'm on, a round up of CDs from Whitby:

Manuskript - Natural High
I'm a little disappointed with this album; it's like a slightly less exciting version of The Cyprus Files. In fact, had I actually realised how much the tracklists crossed over, I might not have bought it.

At least the live versions on TCF convey some of the fun of 'Skript live; the album tracks are all a little flat by comparison. And No Reprise doesn't have the comedy key change in it. Bah. Bring back the Tenebrae remix.

Funhouse - Never Again
Occasionally, I harass people standing near me at record stalls for recommendations for "something new". Someone I didn't know (but later turned out to be Photographer-Steve-from-Coventry) recommended this as being great. (Mind you, he also rated Libitina's new album, that should have made me wary.)

As far as I can tell, Funhouse will regard themselves as having reached the pinnacle of musical achievement if they sound exactly like the Mission. They've very nearly succeeded.

And that's it, really. I didn't dislike it. I'm not that excited about it either.

Subway to Sally - Herzblut
We did this one already. This is the only album on this list I didn't pay money for (it's a borrow, not an own), and I think it has been the one I've been most impressed with.

Mesh - The Point At Which It Falls Apart
(OK, this was technically bought second hand just before Whitby)
Hmm. I've had In This Place Forever and Who Watches Over Me for a while - [livejournal.com profile] grahamb gave me mp3 copies, and I've now bought proper CDs. I really like them both, so had high hopes for this album.

I'm disappointed. It's just a bit... nothingy. I've listened to it a few times, and it's more or less washed over me without being at all memorable. Anyone else noticed this ?

Well, that was a nice grumpy set of reviews, wasn't it :)

Do they still do their "Heads on Spikes" song? I once upset Mike by suggesting that it was silly and that they should probably drop it.

   Heads on spikes,
   heads on spikes,
   heads on spikes,
   are all alike

You can see how he might have been resistent to the suggesting - if they dropped everything silly from their set they'd, er, have a very short set.

Really very short.

I don't think I've heard it, though, so perhaps he took your advice to heart.

Funhouse. Oh.

They're an excellent live band. Great stage presence, wicked sense of humour, great sound.

On CD... well, what you said, basically. I own two Funhouse CDs. Both bought at the same gig. Ooops.
