OK, I want opinions on chocolate.

Now, as previously discussed with some of you, I'm not an enormous fan of chocolate. Sure, I like it, but I don't really hold it in the kind of reverence that many do. It's a niceish, sweet tasting thing - sadly not the extreme sensual experience which some people seem to find it (and do they really, or are they just exaggerating ?)

So, what I want to know: how much chocolate is too much ? How many people actually don't think there is such a thing as too much ? People who are allergic/intolerant to chocolate (hello, half my family) are a different case. Would anyone seriously claim to be addicted to chocolate ?

For reference, I've eaten a Tw*x and two Cadbury's Roses in the last hour, and am now feeling distinctly queasy about the whole experience. Should have stopped after the Tw*x, really, but when someone hands anything edible round I eat some on reflex.

Update: is there any mileage in the idea that extreme dedication to the eating of chocolate is a female thing ? A quick mental survey of blokes of my acquaintance suggests "no", but some people seem to believe it quite firmly.

Hullo - unknowns always welcome :)

I've been repeatedly informed by all and sundry that American chocolate is Just Not Right, and is exempt from all the rules pertaining to "proper" chocolate. Since I've only been to the US once and didn't eat any, I've got no idea.

From your ratings, it sounds like you're putting American chocolate below European stuff - or maybe just that you're only eating the top quality European stuff ?

Hershey's tastes of vomit. It doesn't count.

That sounds like a bad product decision to me.

I've only ever eaten Hershey's as part of those peanutty things (whose name escapes me), which I rather like, though they're very sweet.

American chocolate: the "Just Not Right" probably comes from the wax content. Wax is added seasonally to cheap american chocolate to decrease it's tendency to melt during shipping. It makes the chocolate less flavorful, and the consistency "waxy", oddly enough.

But, having been raised on it, I mind it not. And a 'bad' bar of chocolate is still pretty darn good.

When I hanker look for the choice stuff, I buy a bar of ghirardelli, which is an American company that's been making chocolate for 150 years, and is delish. Take THAT you snobby european choclatiers!!

by the way, is this the Elizabeth that stayed in America with [livejournal.com profile] keris? If so, Hey there! This is Nat! If not, forget I said anything.

Nope, this is not the Elizabeth you're looking for :)

And sorry, I did check what nationality Godiva was, but didn't look up the other one. Send us some and I'll set the chocolate snobs on reviewing it for you - though I'm guessing there's far, far too many laws preventing someone from sending comestibles between the UK and the US (and vice versa) at the moment.

Actually, I am curious now: any locals visiting the US in the near future ? I'll give you money to bring me chocolate back, I'm intrigued about the wax.

Well, I'll be visiting the UK in late April (going to see what this "Whitby" thing is all about.) I'd be happy to provide examples of especially good and especially bad American Chocolate.

Oooh, splendid... I'll be at Whitby, too (in fact, I think I'm sharing a flat with [livejournal.com profile] keris and [livejournal.com profile] davefish, so shouldn't be too hard to locate.)

I'll endeavour to find some suitably, er, interesting UK confectionery to swop with you :)

You can buy Hershey's chocolate and Rees's (sp?) chocolate with Peanut Butter inside at Woolworths. I'll see if I can get you some on my way in tomorrow.

American chocolate: The wax may well contribute to it, but I just find it way too sweet in general. And now you've gone and mentioned Ghirardelli (those people on one of the piers in San Fransisco, right?). Oh god, childhood memories of the chocolate factory tour, and he biggest ice cream sundae with chocolate sauce *ever*. You fiend in human form <shakes fist>

[stomps around and curses the effect this is having on the diet]
