Can't get you out of my head

OK, this is an even longer shot than last time...

Yup, something else I can't quite pin down is stuck in my head.

This time, all you're getting to go on is that the line ends "...Victoria, Victoria.". It's quite fast, and it's a bloke singing. I don't think it's the Kinks' song. In fact, I'm wondering if it might be filed in my head in the same section as "obscure New Zealand stuff" - but it isn't Victoria by The Exponents either.

No, I don't expect anyone will get it from that description. Still, one can but try.

Update: Gotcha!
Once again, I throw everyone off by getting a key fact wrong. In this case, it wasn't a bloke singing :( Nor was it from NZ, though it's hardly scure:

Avoid the cliches of the time
Towing the standard lover's line
We drag around a ball and chain
Morals of old victoria, victoria

- Surplus, by Psychophile.

Y'know, I can't help thinking they mean "toeing" there :)

Also, I want to know where this excessive use of the phrase "That is all." originates from. Come on, [livejournal.com profile] mr_tom, you're one of the worst culprits. Tell!

"That is all" is what submarine captains use to end their general remarks to the staff over the PA. Well, in the movies, at least. Gene Hackman does it very well, I seem to recall.

I'm willing to have this report superceded, if anyone has better information.

[livejournal.com profile] stevezero is also someone who overuses "That is all". I'd never really thought about where it might come from though. Hmm.

BARCELONA! Such a beautiful horizon

The top Google result for the phrase is a lovely article, though it doesn't really answer your question.

Opt for "C'est tout" instead, and make the phrase your own...

Can I suggest "That's yer lot." as a possible alternative which reclaims your linguistic heritage?

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-01-15 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
I'm working on a typographically-correct rendition of "That's All Folks" which will play the Loony Tunes theme tune if you hover your mouse over it.

Oh yes.

Oh my god! We've created a monster!

Back-of-the-mind - is it Victoria by The Fall?

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-01-15 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think so. I'm not aware of knowing that song. I'll have to listen to a copy of it to check - to be honest I'm quite hazy about what the Fall sound like.

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-01-15 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
It isn't - see update :)

For an embarrassingly long time that was the only version I knew of The Kinks' song. [livejournal.com profile] venta, imagine it sung by drunk office workers, at the top of their voices, at the top of a bus. Illustrative actions optional.

For an embarrassingly long time...

Longer! :-}

No idea about the song.

"That is all" instinctively made me think of "Your Christian names are still an insuperable barrier, that is all!" (ie, Gwendolyn and Cecily, "Importance of Being Earnest"). When I use it that's where it comes from, but I'm not one of the people you're referring to so I really have no idea about that either!

Vicoria, Victoria? It occurred a lot in an Italian song sung by a very light tenor at Georgian evenings at Aske Hall.

C'est tout? Pretentious? Moi?

And, since you've asked for ID, Spelunca.

Aha! So that explains why the phone line's busy :) Give me a quick call if you see this (not urgent)?

M*A*S*H. It was at the end of every communication on the camp PA.

That is all.
