Well, after a culturally confused meal of mulled wine and Chinese takeaway, I think it's about time to think about New Year's resolutions.
Last year, I resolved to:
1. Become healthy.
2. Become more determined.
3. Become a more old fashioned cook.
Well, 1 seems to have gone off reasonably well so far. Beyond occasional acheyness, or legitimate pain if I overdo it, my neck is more or less mended. Except for the monster cold I had over Christmas, I've done a pretty good job at avoiding the sniffly ills of the season, I've hardly bothered the doctor, and in general I all seem to be reasonably functional. Woohoo. I do, of course, intend to keep this up, but hopefully it's not requiring of a special resolve.
2 has seen some progress, but run into another problem. In a small way, I've got a lot better at not doing things just because someone else wanted me to, and in sticking to what I want (bizarrely, this is to a large extent due to help from someone else). However, in terms of big things I'm still very bad at seeing past what other people want or expect, and working out what I actually want. How one actually does this, of course, is an interesting question.
3 started off reasonably well, but cooking has tailed off a bit towards the end of the year. However, I've promised
narenek that I'll try making a turducken, and back in August I promised Rick I'd cook gumbo again. So I'll attempt a few minor cooking feats, but I don't think this is something to worry about in this year's bout of resolving.
So, for this year's resolutions, I think we'll have the following.
1. Put more time into musical stuff. I'd like to locate myself a piano I can use in Oxford, and I should make the effort to practise the oboe regularly (apologies to housemates). Also, the concertina Dave is currently repairing for me, somewhere up on Teesside, should with luck be ready in the next few weeks. I don't think I'll ever be a stunning musician, but I do have it in me to be at least competent if only I can get back into the habit of practising properly.
2. Put more time into writing. Some time over a year ago I commented that a big ambition of mine was to have a book published: this is clearly not going to have a chance of happenning unless I write one. If nothing else, I should finish the novel that was started over a year ago, and attempt to discover whether I'm just another annoying person banging on about writing, or whether I have the capacity to write something reasonable.
3. Think. I've never been prone to analysing what I think, feel, want or where I'm going. I drift, and sometimes I don't like where I drift to. This is, of course, a rather nebulous resolution, and one that'll be difficult to tie down to whether it's achieved anything; I guess it could be a continuation of last year's 2. If, this time next year, I can feel that I've made decisions rather than have them happen to me, and that I've made them correctly, I'll count it as a success.
4. [censored]
It's nothing particularly controversial, ludicrous or personal (or indeed interesting), merely something I don't feel all that comfortable writing about here. If I carry through from intention to action, then comments will probably be forthcoming.
