Do you remember, as a kid, watching Blue Peter and being amazed at how their craft projects Just Worked? At home, you faffed about with Pritt stick that didn't stick, and models that unrolled themselves as soon as you turned your back.

Tonight I have been making myself a Despicable Me shrink ray for a fancy-dress New Year party. I used blue cardboard, black tissue paper, gold card recycled from last New Year's costume and... Superglue.

Take some stiff card. Roll it into a tube. Apply glue. And it Just Sticks. It's bloody marvellous. Mind you, I did stick my shrink ray to my fingers a couple of times. Swings and roundabouts.

I am impressed. I have always found superglue useless for glueing card. Best for glueing fingers to each other.

This is a Loctite product I haven't seen before - it comes in a bottle with a little brush, like nail varnish. Seems pretty good at sticking everything I've tried it on thus far (sadly including fingers).

What did you do after supergluing your fingers? Cut them apart? Eek.

Fortunately in each case I realised that my fingers were becoming stuck and managed to pull them apart/away from the cardboard before they were properly stuck. I didn't really have a plan B for how to get them apart if they stuck fast!

Generally you can gradually prise them apart with something like a teaspoon handle and lots of soap to lubricate.

I was astonished this year to learn that actually pritt stick *is* really good at sticking things, but only if they'll stay put until it's *dry*. So good for two flat surfaces but rubbish for cardboard tubes.

I'd love to see a photo of the finished shrink ray.
