Attempt 1: Right hand on lid.
Attempt 2: Same again wearing (dry) washing up gloves.

I used to own a "device", but rubber gloves work way, way better. I have never tried [livejournal.com profile] ylla's elastic band approach, but suspect that might also work well for similar reasons.

Maybe I should try rubber gloves. I have decent grip, so thus far failure to open jars (which is rare, it's a talent I'm usually quite proud of!) is more of a lack-of-torque issue.

At present, I can't open jars at all due to a thumb injury sustained while wrestling with a particularly recalcitrant one a month ago :(

Lack of torque likely won't be solved by this method. However, relatively few jars IME require really high torque to open. More often it seems to be a question of sustained torque, which is why passing the jar to someone else to open works far more often than it seems as though it should regardless of who you pass it to.

I should have said: I believe it to be a lack of torque issue, which is why I ought to try the gloves to test this :-)
