Last night I went to Ronnie Scott's in Soho, to see Boo Hewerdine.

To all the people who are saying "Who?", then...

... he was the singer in the 80s band 'The Bible'
... if you remember Eddi Reader releasing "The Patience of Angels", he wrote that (though actually I can't stand that song)

More to the point, he's a very fine singer and songwriter. I'm occasionally confused about why he isn't better known.

Last night proved to be the night of the ever-changing line up, as he was joined at various times by assorted combinations of Rosalie Deighton (the support), a couple of other ex-Bible members, and Graham Henderson, the world's most amiable Swiss-army session man. They're all very competent musicians, and so it made for a really interesting set of performances, of quite a wide range of songs. Best moment, to me, was an absolutely fantastic rendition of "Honey Be Good", which I think is fast becoming one of my favourite songs.

Rather strange to be at a gig where one sits at little tables, with gingham cloths, and waitresses bring drinks to you. Not my usual style at all :) To be fair, Ronnie Scott's looks exactly like I imagine a jazz club ought - low ceilings, little shaded lamps, walls covered in photos of people who've played there.

And Ikkyu, the lovely Japanese restaurant near Leicester Square, has closed down. Bastards.

Any recommendations ?

And I defy anywhere to serve nicer Gyoza than Ikkyu did.
