OK, so a little while back I asked you lovely, helpful people for some boardgame recommendations. I was after a present for some friends, and the suggestions were many and varied.

In the end, I took myself off to see [livejournal.com profile] beckyl. I was more-or-less decided, from the suggestions I'd had, that I was going to go for Libertalia. It's reasonably new, it looked interesting and it's got pirates. Everyone likes pirates, right?

BeckyL and [livejournal.com profile] grumblesmurf were both in the shop, and they sat me down and addressed me on the topic at length. They listened to my requirements, made a few more enquiries, and started trotting out suggestions.

After a while, BeckyL correctly identified that I had developed crippling choice-agoraphobia and was in danger of dithering myself to a standstill. She took a large, shiny box from the shelf, handed it to me, and said "buy this".

I respond well to firm instructions, so I bought it.

"It" turned out to be Tzolk'in, and it seems it has gone down extremely well with its recipients. I hope to make its acquaintance properly next time I'm visiting.

(Grumblesmurf can clearly identify an impressionable shopper, and flogged me a copy of Coup as well before I made it out the door. I commend it to your attention, if you have not yet met it.)

I also bring to my own attention: games make excellent presents, as they are almost invariably cuboid. Next year, try not to give so many people things in bottles as presents. They are a bugger to wrap.

Anyway, the short version: thank you all for your assistance, Tzolk'in appears to be a winner, and Eclectic Games is an excellent emporium staffed by helpful people :)

Are you in Reading a lot? I've no idea where you're based, these days.

I'm sure if you went in to Eclectic and asked to be sold a pocket-sized game they'd oblige :)

And I'm amazed no-one else has noticed that that's the name of the game

It always surprises me which ones people do or do not spot (or at least comment upon spotting :)

You may have a kudo all to yourself.

I'm currently living in Didcot, but don't get out all that much. My mother lives in Reading, so I visit the edges of Caversham quite often, but the centre of town relatively rarely. My dentist is also in Reading, and much more central, although I visit him rather less often (I am overdue to make an appointment at present, though).

If I'm organised some time when K is in Cornwall and I'm not, I could potentially be free to come to Reading when I do get out of the house, though.

Well, I'm invariably in Reading during working hours... but work in a place where they'd let me pop out if you fancied meeting up for a coffee or something, if it happens to fit in with your plans at any point :)
