There is something wrong with the world. In my day-job, I regularly use two different IDEs: Visual Studio and Eclipse. Because I'm like that, I have Eclipse set up to use Emacs as its text editor.

So, I'm regularly switching between environments with different key-bindings. In one IDE, I can sort out the indentation on code by hitting Ctrl-I. In the other, it's Ctrl-K Ctrl-F.

Here's the weird bit: Ctrl-K Ctrl-F is Visual Studio.

To anyone who has no idea what I'm talking about, the correct response is "wow, that's quite surprising, you'd expect it to be the other way round". If you want to make a more oblique comment, you could say http://xkcd.com/378/.

Heh. I was whinging to [livejournal.com profile] ar_boblad about the shortcut keys in my library cataloguing software (e.g. Ctrl-S is 'copy subfield' and Ctrl-L is 'Save'). He responded with "Emacs", which shut me up.

I wonder if that goes back to an even more retro interface: the ctrl-k something smacks of the old WordStar interface.

I have to say I don't really like multi-key shortcuts for anything that a single undo can revert.

But yes: "wow, that's quite surprising, you'd expect it to be the other way round".

I'd be more impressed if to save and exit in any microsoft product esc:x! worked. The number of times I've put that at the bottom of documents (in emails it's esc:x!sy) and not noticed until gone for review is... well, it's greater than null, anyway.
