It's Friday, it's about 3 o'clock. It's time to go underneath the covers (with the lights out).

I always recommend listening to a cover version without knowing what or who it is, so click on the link before reading ahead...

Today's cover version [mp3 download]

That was China Drum covering Wuthering Heights, originally by Kate Bush

... with apologies for Kate Bush for a second massacre.

I'm not sure whether this one's really a legitimate topic for posting, because surely everyone and their dog already knows it. I'm a big fan of it, though, and it's my LJ so I'll post China Drum if I want to. Although I'm willing to bet that a good half of you got it from the first guitar-squeal.

This was the bonus track on the Goose Fair album, which is well worth the effort if you like your jumpalong punky rock. Though, for some reason, I don't seem to own a copy. I must sort that out.

The other interesting thing about China Drum is that the lead singer was also the drummer, which you don't see very often. That always scores highly on the Venta tickybox review scale.

Yeah, I sort-of do too, which is why I linked those five together. The first three definitely count properly, though.

I do think it's worth noting that those five drummers sing on some quite significant tracks, though - not just filler songs, but some pretty big hits. Regarding the Monkees, I'm amused to discover that in fact none of them was originally a drummer, and all 4 had a go: "had the live performance lineups been based solely on playing ability, it should have been Tork on guitar, Nesmith on bass, and Jones on drums, with Dolenz taking the fronting role". Dolenz wound up on drums because no one could see Davy Jones behind the kit. :D
