I haven't mentioned the Indelicates on here in a while, have I? They're still going. I still think they're great. You should still listen to them
The Camden Head is a tiny venue on Camden High Road. The pub itself is a perfectly sensible size, but the upstairs room is small, and a funny shape.
I got there and folded myself into a perculiar bit of space between some chairs and a radiator to watch the support act of Mr Solo. Who, it transpires, should have some sort of award for having a repellently-designed MySpace page, even by the repellent standards of MySpace.
I had no idea who Mr Solo was. On the way into the pub, I'd observed a bloke in shirt, jeans, brown shoes and frankly outrageous eye make-up milling around downstairs. Once re-clad in heeled gold boots, black and gold lame clothes, a cape and a wig and onstage, the eyes made an awful lot more sense.
Anyway, he and his band (who all had names like "The Tsar" and "The Duke" crowded onto the tiny stage. Well, three of them did. It really is a very tiny stage. Mr Solo himself had to stand on the floor, and the French horn player (they had a French horn! How exciting is that?) was practically in the audience.
Mr Solo appears to be the bizarre bastard offspring of
tukie and John Otway. He has the same ability as Otway to be entertaining on stage while doing things which are patently too ludicrous to be funny. So, he postured and leaped about, and sang songs which were full of dreadful puns and silly lyrics, and was generally the sort of act you can enjoy a lot without knowing any of the songs.
Once they'd cleared themselves away, there was another burst of scrambling to try and fit all five of The Indelicates on stage. ChrisC bravely fought his way to the bar and back to fetch me a pint, as the Camden Head was rather politely providing a very decent pint of Adnams. Not that I'm bitter about having recently had to drink truly awful lager at the Relentless Garage.
Anyway, the Indelicates appear to have picked up a new bass player since I saw them last; their former bass player always looked as if she were a bit confused to be in a band at all (despite being perfectly competent). Sadly, they'd also only just got back from an extended holiday in America, hadn't rehearsed, and one of them was quite ill.
So the show was moderately shambolic. Which, actually, was no bad thing. They're all musically competent so the songs they did play came out well, and the ramblings that came out in between were very, very funny.
I've been a bit underwhelmed by the idea of Simon Indelicate writing a concept album based on the life and work of David Koresh[*], but the couple of songs they did from it were very impressive. I should have had more faith than someone who can write a musical based on the Book of Job can write a concept album based on an American religious maniac.
I still maintain that everyone should like the Indelicates (and I know some of you are resisting); my new advice is that they're even more likable when they're seriously under-rehearsed.
[*] Which is, as ChrisC pointed out, patently their Baader Meinhof album.

Date: 2010-11-05 02:35 pm (UTC)Wow! That's got to be a first - I own a CD by a band you hadn't heard of! Do I get to do a victory lap? ("All Will Be Revealed" is actually a very good album. I recommend it.)

Date: 2010-11-05 03:58 pm (UTC)ChrisC: Mr Solo sounds like he should be in David Devant and his Spirit Wife.
Me: Does he? I've no idea what they sound like.
ChrisC: Neither do I. I'm just guessing from the name.
[Wikipedia is consulted]
ChrisC: Bloody hell. He is in David Devant and his Spirit Wife.
