Several years ago, I set out trying to track down things which had scared me when I was little. Some of them were easy to face, some of them required a certain amount of handholding from generous friends.

As of yesterday, I think the list is complete (until something else occurs to me).

There's a painting called St. Veronica's Handkerchief, by a German 19th century painter called Gabriel Max (or Gabriel von Max). It's an optical illusion - as you look at it, it opens its eyes.

It's not scary.

Unless you find it unexpectedly in a dark corner of a church. Then when you ask your mum, she says no, its eyes aren't moving at all. (She still claims that this was not an exercise in parental cruelty, she genuinely couldn't "see" it).

I'm still looking for a reproduction of the original painting, but it turns out that there are a few smallish copies kicking about on line. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] metame, who's a better googler than me.

You can see it here, though be warned that the page is enough to put a churchgoer off Christianity.

Apologies to anyone who thought from the subject line they were getting some much more interesting.

You were right the first time: it's creepy!

Hrm... I /can/ see it with the eyes closed, but I have to look deliberately, so I don't get the shock-value of seeing the flip.

What is 'spooky' to me is simply how shadowy the eyes are *shrugs*

Perhaps 'laid to rest'?

Scarier than the painting to me was the music on the page.
