Shopping for kicks, got the weekend to get through

It's Friday, it's about 3 o'clock. It's time to go underneath the covers (with the lights out).

That was the Elvis Costello covering What Do I Do Now, originally by Sleeper.

This is the first appearance of a guest cover: it's one suggested by phlebas, and comes from issue 17 of the now sadly defunct Volume magazine (an issue our household doesn't have on its shelves).

My ideas of Sleeper remain (sadly) coloured by the immense disappointment of seeing them live, but even allowing for that, I think this is a pretty bland song. Costello's cover of it somehow lends it a bit of gravitas and makes it sound rather less banal and more interesting.

Although, as my friend Jamie put it: "I find the thought of the man who referred to his contemporaneous lyricists as 'pygmies' doing a Sleeper cover quite amusing" :)

Ah I like the original as bouncy pop, although I'd spotted who was singing before I worked out what he was singing (and hadn't remembered who did the original).

I like Elvis Costello, but I prefer him more upbeat too really [Urgh, and the "raining, raining" droning droning near the end is painful]

My Ruby Trax box set arrived yesterday (and was very well packaged, which was just as well given the postie left it under the front doormat on a rainy day) and I'm looking forward to listening to the rest of it :)

I like things like Statuesque and Sale of the Century as bouncy pop, but always felt this one didn't have quite enough bounce to justify its existence :)
