Dear Google,

It's not April 1st, y'know.

Cheers,

Venta

Who still looks at the Google home page? Search = CTRL-K, type search term, RET.

There is that, yes. Or using the search box at the top of the browser.

Like I said above, not me. It's the boneheaded stupidity of Google's decision that affronted me.

Hmm, it'll probably take quite a few months to save me the amount of time I've spent writing these two comments, actually.... ;-)

Ctrl-K being a feature of what? I've just tried it (Firefox 3.6.3, Windows) and it did nothing whatsoever.

(I frequently look at the Google homepage, since I <3 'Advanced Search'.)

Firefox 3.6.3, Windows XP, and Ctrl-K takes me to the google seach box I have on my tool bar.

Which is total nonsense, any fule kno that Ctrl-K is cut-line-of-text.

Aha! Toolbar plugins is the kind of nonsense up with which I will not put.

You'd be surprised. Some fules make very poor editor choices. ;-)

It's part of the default configuration of Firefox. CTRL-E in IE8 or just CTRL-L in Chrome, which does lots of guesswork about what you entered.

It's part of the default configuration of Firefox.

Apparently not.

It's there in every Firefox I use, and I just created a fresh profile to test it and there it was. So yes, I think it is the default.

See [livejournal.com profile] venta's comment. It's because you've installed Google toolbar.

I have not installed Google toolbar on any web browser.

So - when you press Ctrl-K what actually happens?

Input focus moves to the search box at the top right. Image. You'll have to trust me that it's there in every Firefox I have, I'm not going to screenshot them all!

The google toolbar looks like this - it's a lot more than just the browser's built-in search box.

Oh, OK. Most peculiar.

Mine looks like this:

I'm pretty sure the default installation includes it in the "navigation toolbar", immediately to the right of the address bar.

I just installed current FF in a VM that’s never had FF installed at all. I accepted the defaults and didn’t import anything from any other browser. The search box still exists l-)

Fair enough. This being the case, I must have some kind of setting that's carried over from an earlier version which is causing it not to appear.

Brief experimentation suggests I can have one if I want it via "configure".

I look at the Google home page often, because it's my home page. Nice low bandwidth, with a clean page look and some of the time it's just what I want. Or at least those were my reasons for the last few years up until yesterday, if this weren't temporary I'd probably home page to somewhere else.

PS: Dear LJ spellchecker, when I typed yeterday I meant yesterday, well done for suggesting that first. But why did you think I could possibly have meant Darda?
