I don't seem to have done much rapper-related posting on here for a while (new readers who don't know what rapper is, begin here :)
Anyway, it's DERT time again - the national rapper competition where grown people wave bits of metal round their heads, suddenly take their dancing inexplicably seriously and, in some cases, drink too much. Derby beware.
Actually, the reason I haven't done much rapper-related posting is because of late I haven't been doing a huge amount of rapper. Mabel Gubbins has been snoozing. Not very many people seem to want us at their events, and those who do maliciously pick days when we can't field five people with no prior commitments.
We've also had a few new starters coming along to Mabel practices, so we've been concentrating on getting them up to speed (and, in specific one case, trying to perform corrective surgery to stop her from being so damn tall). All in all, the arrival of the competition season took us vaguely by surprise.
We had a weekend practice just before Easter - a Friday-and-Saturday of intensive training for the dancing and the drinking too much. I don't think we've really got taking it seriously under control yet, though. In past years I've rarely managed it anyway, but usually at least two of the others can muster pre-DERT nightmares. I think this is the best way to be - the competition standard has soared in recent years, and I don't think there's any serious hope of us winning anything. So, as far as I'm concerned, I'm off for a fun weekend with some friends, where someone will kindly have arranged us a nice rapper tour of some pleasant pubs.
Reports, reviews and potential word-eating to follow!

Date: 2010-04-09 10:24 am (UTC)(The Derby Ram, for point-claiming purposes)
"And all the lads of Derby come begging for his eyes
to make themselves footballs of, for they was football-size"
Possibly one of the most macabre bragging songs.

Date: 2010-04-09 11:22 am (UTC)I think I took that song way too seriously when I was small. I remember quite seriously asking my Dad whether it was possible to have a sheep so big that a coach-and-four was able to drive between its legs. Can't remember his answer, though, disappointingly.
[edited to make, like, sense]

Date: 2010-04-09 11:21 am (UTC)I'm sure that practicing with a group of new, inexperienced rappers is a good solution to the problem of being too tall... ;)
