Well... every so often I spit out a lyrics quiz. But I thought for a change we'd have a poetry quiz.

Disclaimer: my taste in poems runs towards the old-fashioned and I've tried to stick to poems I expect to be well-known. This quiz is drawn from things which spring immediately to my mind, which mostly means things I learned by heart when I was little. [livejournal.com profile] exspelunca is not barred from entering, but she is barred from winning on the grounds she has an unfair advantage, having taught me most of them :)

Admit it, you were actually brought up during the 1950s ;-)

Morally, yes. I'm also good on The Goon Show, The Navy Lark, and ways to make a nutrtious meal out of a tin of corned beef :)

Mm, corned beef and potato pie.

OK, now you're scaring me.

Is corned beef balls what you get when you get into too hot a bath on a cold day?

Left hand down a bit.

:)

Do you also say "the wick in the engine's gone out" when someone stalls a car?

I have 'twinging screws' and 'umgrummits' as tags on my LJ. :)

The result of googling for "umgrummits" is slightly surprising.

Ha! That is a thread from alt.usage.english, in a very strange format. (It's a running joke in aue that I am about 30 years older than I really am, thanks to my love of things like Round the Horne and The Navy Lark, among others.)

You're not alone. A while ago a friend of mine looked most surprised at my laughing at one of his jokes, and complained that my sense of humour was at least forty years older than I am.

He's one of the few people I know who, without affectation, still refers to "the wireless".

Ha ha, no, but I will start immediately!

Do any of them involve throwing the corned beef away and eating the tin?

Where do you stand on Kenneth Horne? (Preferably not on him.)

Less familiar, but still pro. Mostly he's left me with a total inability to keep a straight face if someone introduces themselves as Julian.

I have the same problem. Though all the Sandys I know are female.

What a nice idea! You have similar taste to me, though we have different favourites (as will be obvious from how many I get wrong).

Actually, I thought of you when I was writing it as I was wondering whether I ought to put a Tennyson poem in. Couldn't bring myself to, though, as I've still not met one I like much. Which is bad of me, because I'm sure you recommended some reading last time we had a poetry-related thread and I haven't gone and investigated.

I thought I wasn't going to get any of them, but [livejournal.com profile] lathany's a big fan of the last so I know it quite well.

I have a bunch of nagging familiarity and not much else. I ought to know at least three more than I have answered, and I'm not convinced the one I answered is right. On the other hand, I thoroughly approve of this effort of yours.

Glad something I taught you stuck! I like your choices. I'm just amazed you haven't also picked up on e.g. "I go, I come back" from the 1940s radio shows we also remember (and have on cassette).

Is that a quote from something? I thought it was just something Dad said when he went out!

ITMA! My mum says that one a lot too.

So far this year I've read three books about Light Entertainment in the UK, and now I will have to go and re-read my embarrassingly large collection of LE auto/biographies... :)

That, along with "Can I do you now, Sir?", "After you Cecil", "Can I peddle on your pier?" etc are from ITMA/Much-Binding-in-the-Marsh.
