Ladies and gentlemen, a new word:

hidy
v.tr.
[-dies, -dying, -died]
to create order by putting anything messy out of sight somewhere else

Crap, my parents are coming! Hidy the front room!
I've cleared the floor by hidying everything under the bed.

That's excellent; you should post it to [livejournal.com profile] spellfecker!

I love it!

I've been hidying for years....

I'm not, no.

That's odd... I've never heard anyone use it. As far as I'm aware, I spontaneously made it up this morning while sitting on the freezer talking to my housemate.

OK, having now read back over Dave Gorman's twitter feed a bit, that is very odd. I'm not aware of having heard anyone say it. it's almost enough to make you think Rupert Sheldrake isn't a barking loon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morphic_resonance).

Evidently, it's a word whose time has come. I wonder how many people spontaneously started using it in the last few weeks?

Maybe we've had an inspiron storm?

Good one!

When you put the messy thing out of sight on top of a tall cupboard: hidy-high.

Same only with lots of things (or if you're Cab Calloway): hidy-hidy-hidy-hi.

Hidy-hidy-hidy-ho!

(Sorry, it's reflexive!)

Its a common practice...but maybe a new word....Should it be Hidey as in a hidey hole though ???

[identity profile] ebee.livejournal.com 2009-04-30 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
THROWS. Never underestimate the hidiability of putting stuff under a throw!!

[identity profile] shui-long.livejournal.com 2009-04-30 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely useful word.

And do you have one for "O-sh*t-I-filled-all-the-hidy-holes-last-time-what-do-I-do-now?"

You got a new set of parents then? Or is this very advanced hidying for July? Anyway, we're the ones who hide stuff under the beds when visitors are due, so it's probably heredity. And the Dad says is hidying everything a hidywhole?

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2009-05-01 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
They were exemplar sentences, you daft bat, as seen in all the best dictionaries.

Anyway, I don't hidy things when you come round. I might if you kicked off more about the mess :)

That's awesome! I'm sure to use the word myself! :oD
