On Fridays this year we ask...

What's in the Box?

The Box in question is the glovebox of my car, home to my extremely motley tape collection. By the time I owned a car with a tape player tapes were on the way out and most of my music was in CD format. However, charity shops were practically giving tapes away, which meant that I bought rapaciously and eclectically. A half-remembered 80s band who once released a single I'd liked a little ? A band I'd vaguely heard of ? An unknown group with good cover art ? Bring them on.

Of course, the net result is that I've ended up with a tape collection which any music-lover would be slightly ashamed of. There was a relatively narrow window (late 70s to later 80s) when tapes were big news, and my horde represents that. However, in amongst the terrible pop I've found some gems and I reckon its time to come clean about my guilty musical secrets.

Today in The Box we have:

Right Said Fred - Up

In the last few weeks, The Box has been veering into credibility. Having lulled you all into a false sense of security, I thought I'd better remind everyone that it's not all country legends and outdated indie cool.

Oh no.

However, I'm going to stand by Right Said Fred. Their songs are a bit silly, and were never going to be Mercury-nominated or fêted in serious music publications. But by its lights this is a good album. It's trivial pop, a bit of light fun and full of catchy choruses.

Yes, I do still feel slightly ashamed for saying that :)

I'm not sure that Right Said Fred would be good unto the second and third albunms, though Wikipedia tells me they've had another five. And are big in Germany.

It amuses me that Amazon bundles Up with Ace of Bass :)

Wikipedia also tells me that there's a Heavenly Records covers album which features St. Etienne singing I'm Too Sexy. Anyone got a copy !?

The Heavenly Records thing was a Terence Higgins Trust Benefit EP with St Etienne, The Rockingbirds and Flowered Up each doing one of RSF's three hits. I have it on 12" single.

Is it any cop ? I'm not familiar with the Rockingbirds, but I'm very curious about the other two.

The Saint etienne track is good, Flowered Up were always sub-Madchester wannabes at best, The Rockingbirds were country-ish London act whose finest moment was a cover of 'You're Good Girls Gonna Go Bad' with lesley rankine of Silverfish on vocals.

See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5cjgFgBQm0 for the St Etienne Sexy.

NB the lyrics are quite different to the original...
