Out of interest, does anyone know when they're first scheduled to do any colliding ? Apparently estimates are that they might have beams going in both directions by this evening, but I assume that actual collisions will be some time in the future.
On the CERN website, which is being somewhat sluggish, unsurprisingly, the 'Official Inauguration' is on 21 October, but there's no date mentioned for the first collision. Presumably, they'll announce it now they know the thing works.
I was amused to note the BBC using the headline "Success for Big Bang experiment" when the beam first made it all the way round. OK, it was a success, but I feel the headline might have rather implied that the whole thing was finished and the Big Bang solved :)
