On Fridays this year, we ask...

What's in the Box?

The Box in question is the glovebox of my car, home to my extremely motley tape collection. By the time I owned a car with a tape player tapes were on the way out and most of my music was in CD format. However, charity shops were practically giving tapes away, which meant that I bought rapaciously and eclectically. A half-remembered 80s band who once released a single I'd liked a little ? A band I'd vaguely heard of ? An unknown group with good cover art ? Bring them on.

Of course, the net result is that I've ended up with a tape collection which any music-lover would be slightly ashamed of. There was a relatively narrow window (late 70s to later 80s) when tapes were big news, and my horde represents that. However, in amongst the terrible pop I've found some gems and I reckon its time to come clean about my guilty musical secrets.

Today in The Box we have:

The Lost Boys (Soundtrack)

This is a rare example of a tape which I actually paid actual proper money for, at actual proper prices, back when tapes where actually sold in actual shops. If I recall correctly, I bought it in Woolworths, though I think even then it may have been in a bargain bin.

There are some film soundtracks - like, say, Grease - where you hear them so many times you actually become completely sick of them and stop listening. I'm fairly sure that The Lost Boys was played to death in its day, but when I unearthed it a few months back I discovered that it's actually surprisingly enjoyable.

Beauty Has Her Way is one of the few tracks which doesn't sound like it was recorded by INXS - there are only two INXS tracks on the tape, but most of the rest of the songs sound as if they really want to be.

Mummy Calls - Beauty Has Her Way

I have this on CD, having replaced my tape copy a few years ago. I reckon it's the soundtrack I listen to most often (and I do own a few).

It's true, they don't sound like Inxs... they sound like Human League!

I liked the sax (?) solo, though.

I think it sounds a little bit like they're inspired by Labyrinth-era Bowie, too...

Possibly that's just me.

In my first term at boarding-school, EVERYONE else on my floor had this on tape. To this day hearing the songs brings back the dark scared lonely feelings.

I only watched the film itself a couple of years ago - it was weird to be so familiar with the soundtrack while knowing nothing about the plot!

Yes, I had that weirdness with The Last Temptation of Christ, since Passion is one of my all-time favourite albums. I did know a little bit about the plot of the film before seeing it and hence could guess from the titles of the tracks roughly what sorts of scenes they came from. But it's not like the familiar situation which ought to be similar, where a film just uses music you know.

I bought this on CD about 18 years ago, musically it's *eh* but I loved the movie so had to have it :)

Wow, I think I might still have this on cassette tape, too, in a shoebox stored at my parent's house. It was much appreciated in its day.

I have fond memories of this film and the time when it came out. Always kinda liked the soundtrack :-)

I was fairly familiar with the soundtrack long before seeing the film, which (as is probably no surprise to anyone else...) excellent.
