Or does everyone else think of oven chips whenever Senator John McCain is mentioned ?

Me too!

I rechristened him King Harry McCain two years ago for random party-related reasons, and it has stuck. I'm not sure 'King Harry' means much to people younger than me, but perhaps it does?

I am certain that I'm misremembering the lyrics, but still...

McCain oven chips from the chip pan
Great for the kids and the old man
Better than chips from the chip pan
40% less fat!

Hmm. Posts like this are always consoling, because nearly everyone who comments agrees that yes, McCain is synonymous with over chips. Sadly, I fear this is because all the people who disagree think "Pah, political imbecile" and move on without commenting.

I do believe that the little tape player in the back of my brain will henceforth ring out "ahh McCain, you've done it again" upon every mention of Senator John.

But I'm not sure that I'd made the connection before, beyond a niggling feeling of 'that name reminds me of something'.

I don't, but I'm a transplanted american whose knowledge of the McCain individual predates my knowledge of oven chips. So instead I think of the scary old politician whenever someone mentions the oven chips.

No, it isn't just you; in fact, I'm glad it isn't just me. I frequently ask my wife if she's going to vote for "McCain's Oven Chips". Unfortunately, McCain's oven chips don't exist in America (even under the name "fries").

Yes! So much so that I had to check the name three times in my reply to your comment just now to be sure I wasn't imagining it.

Really not just you.
The thought about chips is usually followed in my mind by some unprintables and then remembering the great chip scandal some years back when it was discovered 'high class' restaurants were giving their honoured guests plates of McCain's and charging things like 15squids a plate (I may be exaggerating this was some time ago now.)
