Or does everyone else think of oven chips whenever Senator John McCain is mentioned ?

Me too!

I rechristened him King Harry McCain two years ago for random party-related reasons, and it has stuck. I'm not sure 'King Harry' means much to people younger than me, but perhaps it does?

I am certain that I'm misremembering the lyrics, but still...

McCain oven chips from the chip pan
Great for the kids and the old man
Better than chips from the chip pan
40% less fat!

King Harry doesn't ring any bells with me, but I'm not always a good indicator for my age-range.

I'm stuck.

Someone else's turn!

Hmm. Posts like this are always consoling, because nearly everyone who comments agrees that yes, McCain is synonymous with over chips. Sadly, I fear this is because all the people who disagree think "Pah, political imbecile" and move on without commenting.

I do believe that the little tape player in the back of my brain will henceforth ring out "ahh McCain, you've done it again" upon every mention of Senator John.

But I'm not sure that I'd made the connection before, beyond a niggling feeling of 'that name reminds me of something'.

Pratchett reference says Harry King from The Truth and Going Postal/Making Money is the self-made businessman, 'King of the Golden River' but I suspect that this is a note to the original source rather than your context.

I think I'm a tiny bit younger than Venta.

In which case, just to help balance your poll, I'll respond with a no. I think it's due to it being a British brand thing. I associate frozen potato products with OreIda.

Actually, I have no idea how old you are. Without trying to check in some manner (probably simple, but I was being lazy) my mental default says you're older than me, and younger than grumblesmurf, and that you're closer to my age than his. That still leaves a six year span, plus the perfectly valid possibility of me being completely wrong.

But don't let me stop you claiming old git-dom if you want to.

Alright, so not following two clicks to your LJ bio info is really lazy, but you're only two years older than me.

Good heavens, really ? For some reason I had it in mind that there was a much bigger gap than that. OK, in that case either I rescind my claim, or you may join me in old git-dom, whichever you prefer.

I don't, but I'm a transplanted american whose knowledge of the McCain individual predates my knowledge of oven chips. So instead I think of the scary old politician whenever someone mentions the oven chips.

No, it isn't just you; in fact, I'm glad it isn't just me. I frequently ask my wife if she's going to vote for "McCain's Oven Chips". Unfortunately, McCain's oven chips don't exist in America (even under the name "fries").

Really not just you.
The thought about chips is usually followed in my mind by some unprintables and then remembering the great chip scandal some years back when it was discovered 'high class' restaurants were giving their honoured guests plates of McCain's and charging things like 15squids a plate (I may be exaggerating this was some time ago now.)
