On Fridays this year, we ask...

What's in the Box?

The Box in question is the glovebox of my car, home to my extremely motley tape collection. By the time I owned a car with a tape player tapes were on the way out and most of my music was in CD format. However, charity shops were practically giving tapes away, which meant that I bought rapaciously and eclectically. A half-remembered 80s band who once released a single I'd liked a little ? A band I'd vaguely heard of ? An unknown group with good cover art ? Bring them on.

Of course, the net result is that I've ended up with a tape collection which any music-lover would be slightly ashamed of. There was a relatively narrow window (late 70s to later 80s) when tapes were big news, and my horde represents that. However, in amongst the terrible pop I've found some gems and I reckon its time to come clean about my guilty musical secrets.

In The Box this week we have:

The Jam - Snap!

I bought this tape relatively recently, leaping on it with glad cries despite owning the album on CD. There are two reasons for this: firstly, it's ideal singing-along-in-the-car fodder. Secondly, the CD is a bit wrong[*]. The tape is a looooong tape. It has more songs on it than will fit on a CD. The CD (more correctly called Compact Snap!) is therefore abridged.

In my car there is a little well between the front seats which holds four tapes. When driving, I can extract a finished tape from the stereo, return it to its box, and put the next in the stereo without taking my eyes off the road. Which means, of course, that I rarely know what tape I've just put on. Hearing the start of opening track In The City always makes me happy: in case you've never noticed, The Jam are bloody brilliant.

Sadly, this tape seems to have had a hard life, and is going the way of all long-playing tapes. It's a little stretched, a little inclined to stick in the player, and the sound quality is heading downhill faster than Ingemar Stenmark on a Sunday teatime.

Despite the decay, here is Thick as Thieves, my favourite not-on-the-compact-version track. I like the imagery of the things they've stolen, and I love the section where two voices are singing verse and chorus at the same time.

NB There has been a complaint that this mp3 is too loud, so approach with caution. I don't want your little ears getting damaged.

[Poll #1135192]

[*] Actually, Amazon demonstrates that I'm now wrong: these days you can buy a double "special edition" CD which has even more tracks on it that my tape has.

But at least it isn't wobbling in and out (of the slalom poles) as much as he used to.
