Does anybody else use the Semagic LJ client ? If so, has it been giving any problems ? Mine's been "unable to contact server" for a few weeks now.

I do, but it's an old (old, old) version which I've not bothered upgrading because I like it. Works great, no problem. Not helpful, I know.

Mine seems to be 1.5.7.5U, which I believe is also quite old.

I do have issues when posting using it through a Remote Desktop connection - for reasons that are totally beyond me.

But as I don't post very often anymore I can workaround...

Same here. No probs at all. I suspect a proxy issue somewhere.

I have a reasonably recent version that works well enough.

Um.

(Broken) Web-proxy?

Oh. Them. I've never really understood about web proxies. I only ever encounter them when they've gone wrong.

<shuffles off to read up>

They cache stuff, so reduces downloading/bandwidth as the proxy can serve the same cached page to local users without hitting the net. They can also be used help control access to sites for users within a network.

Aye, I'm familiar with the purpose, just not the actual mechanics of same. Since my computer isn't on a network, why it thinks it's using one is a mystery.

If you're coming to Whitby, I shall buy you a doughnut...

Web proxy located, switched off, and all is now fine. The remaining mystery is how it came to be set to something odd in the first place.

No idea what the problem is, but I'm curious now: why do you use it ?

Are you asking why I use Semagic, or why I use a client at all ?

I use Semagic because it was the first one I tried, and it seems to do everything I want.

I use a client because it saves drafts and is generally less fragile than typing into a browser window when your laptop is liable to spontaneously shutdown at any moment. I often type entries over a few days. It also enables me to prepare a post, and set it to post at some time in the future - which was useful when I used to post BAYD at 3pm, and work banned access to LJ.

Hmm... that future posting feature must use a server somewhere. Most odd.

They actually fixed the post-losing feature of LJ. It saves drafts periodically now. That said, there's no real reason not to use a client, I just never saw the point.
