Those of you who know me may be immensely surprised to hear that I was greatly looking forward to the launch of the PS3. Here's why...

Some time ago, the hype for the forthcoming console from Sony described how the user was expected not to stack the shiny black box away, but display it proudly. To encourage non-stackability, the sides of the console would be convex.

The press from M$ was remarkably similar. The sleek white box would not be stackable, because it would have concave sides.

You can see where I'm going with this, can't you ?

Well, I tried it at the weekend. They don't. Not even a little bit.

Pah. I've lost all interest in next-generation consoles now.

Does anyone stack them away? Really?

But I feel your pain - and it would have made such a good photo.

I've certainly seen a PS2 in a pile with a DVD, video etc. Whether you're meant to even with that is debatable. I assume (ignoring convexity) that if you stacked a PS3 up your DVD, etc would just melt.

How would concave sides prevent you from stacking it, anyway? If anything it would mean there was a nice air channel above and below it.

I dunno. Actually, given the sides which are curved, they wouldn't really prevent that anyway, so I guess I misunderstood the original thing I read.

Well, if you've got a DVD player, a digibox, a VCR, what are you supposed to do with the games console(s) except stack them? I suppose if you've got an Enormous TV you may be able to place them side by side...

Anyway, it's all moot. If you've got a copy of MAME and ROM images for Pacman and Rally X you have got all the gaming setup you could ever need.

My Wii is oblong.

You can put it short side down, and then DVDs stack nicely against the side. Or you can put it long side down, and then you can put other stuff on top of it. It's almost as if it was cunningly designed to be put on shelves! I tell you, the design features in some of these new consoles really blow the mind...

Just to be endlessly exciting, we ended up forking out for a stand for our PS2, on the grounds that keeping it stacked meant that more of it got dusty sooner, which was not a great addition to our leisure time, having to seriously dust the bugger any time we wanted to play. It works... better...

As we forked out 12.99 Euros to destack our console (the stand involves a round piece of plastic and a screw; oh, the technology!), my suspicion is that soon one will be able to buy conversion kits/stands for PS3 and XBox 360 just to make them stackable, each one lovingly fashioned by a Taiwanese craftsman.
