Things I have learnt during my week in Iceland[*]:

  • Iceland is mostly shut October-April.

  • People who say "Iceland's not that expensive really" are lying. Through their teeth.

  • People who point out that the non-Reykjavik areas of Iceland are sparsely populated are really, really not lying.

  • The Icelandic national passtime is piling rocks on top of other rocks.

  • If you go to Iceland, take a wide-angle lens.

I have also seen many, many exciting things of which there will be more sensible accounts following when I have two spare moments to write them down. I watched slow motion collisions, built sandcastles, wallowed in opaquely blue water, got blown off my feet on a hillside, walked behind a waterfall, ate a lot of fish, drove without major mishap on the "wrong" side of the road, learnt how to say Kirkjubæjarklausturs (badly), got excited about furry green sheep, disagreed with Lonely Planet's views on architecture, started a fashion by tackling a path of sheet ice and generally had a thoroughly fabulous time.

I have also suddenly realised it's Whitby Goth Weekend this coming weekend. And I don't even know the band line-up.

<googles>

The Damned, Vampire Beach Babes - yay!
Trauma Pet - I've heard people say things about this band. Sadly, I can't remember if they were good things.
XYkogen, XPQ21, Katzenjammer Kabaret, Inertia, Uninvited Guest - who ? Any ideas ?

In a mostly unrelated request, is there going to be anyone in Whitby with a spare hour or two who fancies teaching me how to put eye make-up on competently ? I've finally conceded I'm just rubbish at it. All reasonable offers/exchanges considered.

[*] The country, not the supermarket. I actually have heard all variations on this joke now. Several times.

Iceland sounds great. Although - why is October to April out of season? Too cold, I presume?

That and the fact it borders on the Arctic circle, so the fluctuations of daylight hours are huge.
At the minimum (ie Midwinter) it's down to a few hours a day. Lots of time for reciting and learning epics...

I recall that food was pretty horrendously expensive), but we didn´t really buy much else - except fuel, which is desperately expensive in the UK too.

And a jumper, that was quite horrendously expensive but very warm.

Well, ditto. I budgeted what I thought was a large amount for "holiday spends", but it pretty much all went on food, petrol and the very occasional entry fee. So no nice fuzzy jumpers for me.
