At the weekend, I spent an entertaining while trundling round in the Next clearance store. It has a very jumble-sale atmosphere to it with clothes jammed any old how onto hangers and tables, but makes up for it by being really quite cheap. My star purchase was a pair of trousers for £3 - despite not being able to try them on, I succeeded in finding a pair that fits. The major disadvantage seems to be some very ill-designed pockets which, when I sit down, spit their contents all over the floor. Apart from that, I like them. However, they seem to be attracting criticism everywhere I go.

[Poll #417038]

It's ages since I've worn cords, and I'd completely forgotten about the "whhht, whhht" noise they make as you walk along. For some reason it reminds me of walking to the allotment with my parents when I was small - I guess I must have had a pair of knackered old cords for gardening in at the time, or something.

Incidentally, has anyone else been having a lot of problems recently with getting a "zero-sized reply" error message when posting a comment ? This is if posting via the web rather than your mail client; I think I've only seen it since I started using Firefox.

I was considering that it might be something to do with cookies - Firefox seems to go barking mad when it has a lot of cookies to deal with (and indeed seems to stop handling them at all when it gets up to 300). Has anyone got any advice on this issue anyway, regardless of whether it's relevant ? Yes, I'm trying to limit who can set cookies, but it still seems like a bit of a design flaw in Firefox to me.

The trousers sound OK to me, and something I'd wear myself. And for 3 quid - well, if you decide you hate them then they can be outdoorsy trousers or painting trousers or something!

I got myself a satchel in the Next clearance store in Cheshire Oaks over Christmas. That has a design flaw as well. It has a loop through-and-back metal bits closer that isn't quite a buckle because there's no restraining spike to hold it in place. That would be OK in and of itself, apart from the fact that the not-quite-buckle and associated bit of cloth are attatched by poppers to the bag. So if you've got it unpoppered, you can end up losing the buckle bit because it slides open.

And a big boo hiss to Next for having trousers for giants. I found one pair that fitted me if I'm merely wearing heels (as apposed to wearing stilts) when I went to their main store in the Trafford centre, and they were in the petite section. And yet their nice black trousers were otherwise me-shaped and me-sized.

If you're not going to make trousers in a range of lengths, then making them long is better than making them short - if you'd really liked the trousers Next were selling, you could have bought them and shortened them/had the shortened.

Mango takes this to extremes, mind - I don't believe anyone is tall enough for their trousers.

Since I happily own maroon, pink, white and turquiose stripey cords I entirely approve of your choice.
