It was Rubicon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/034911563X/qid=1099647366/ref=pd_ka_0/202-9681970-5069407), by Tom Holland. Covers the events leading up to Caesar's crossing thereof, until the "reinstatement" of the Republic under Augustus. Since it was given my by a classicist, I assume it's Done Properly, but is also very readable to an ill-educated scientist type like me :)
