It's very rare I get the chance to sound erudite, but...

Swiped from [livejournal.com profile] zotz:

Opportunity to be poncy:
Grab the nearest book.
Open the book to page 23.
Find the fifth sentence.
Post the text of the sentence in your journal...
...along with these instructions.

In 367 B.C. a law had been passed that permitted any citizen to stand for election to the great offices of the state - previously a perogative of the patricians alone.

Blame [livejournal.com profile] spindlemere, he gave me it for my birthday :)

Wish I was erudite enough to instantly identify the book! I can't, but it's clearly a chronological review of Roman history, possibly just covering the Republican period, but maybe the whole whack - depends on how many pages there are after 23!

It was Rubicon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/034911563X/qid=1099647366/ref=pd_ka_0/202-9681970-5069407), by Tom Holland. Covers the events leading up to Caesar's crossing thereof, until the "reinstatement" of the Republic under Augustus. Since it was given my by a classicist, I assume it's Done Properly, but is also very readable to an ill-educated scientist type like me :)

Yes, it's supposed to be pretty good.

Good book.

Unfortunetly my closest book happened to be a roleplaying book..... so I'll not be pasting that then.....!

Ooh. Mine is quite pleasing:

"Mr Hyde was pale and dwarfish; he gave an impression of deformity without any namable malformation, he had a displeasing smile, he had borne himself to the lawyer with a sort of murderous mixture of timidity and boldness, and he spoke with a husky whispering and somewhat broken voice, - all these were points against him; but not all of these together could explain the hitherto unknown disgust, loathing and fear with which Mr Utterson regarded him."

"...With both children going to school full-time, I have increased my hours at work and hence my salary. ..."

Lovely sociology report book thing...
