Can I be a proper goth now please ?

Ordinarily, packing to go away to Whitby for a goth weekend happens in a huge hurry[*], and involves jamming a load of things in a bag and sorting out what I've got once I get there. This evening I actually, like, planned what I might wear and packed accordingly. I even tried on a few things. And looked in a mirror. And everything.

I don't imagine anyone will notice the difference :)

Of course, in addition to what I might want to wear to go to the Spa, I have one other problem to consider.

My parents live not very far from Whitby, so tend to pop over and meet me for dinner when I'm there. They've never been particularly into criticising what I wear, so I wasn't worried about them catching sight of me gothed up. After all, I don't wear anything that freakish. Compared to many, I could pretty much pass as normally dressed.

And therein lay the problem. The parents were emphatically unimpressed when I showed up. What, they enquired, was I playing at, turning up dressed as I was ?

Y'see... they'd been wandering round Whitby half the morning. People in everything from full Victorian regalia to the entire contents of Cyberdog were displaying themselves on every street corner. By comparison, laced PVC trousers, a black long-sleeved t-shirt and no make up just didn't cut it. As their own pet gothling I was, frankly, a disappointment.

I am suitably chastened, and these days do my best to present something more acceptable to the parental eyes. So if you see me wandering around with them, don't let on that I've been wearing combats and a t-shirt up til then. 'k?

[*] Actually, packing to go anywhere usually happens in a hurry. But when the packing list goes rapper kit-boots-sleeping bag-thermarest there's a lot less scope for error.
