I reckoned that in order to do well at this, you needed an interest in lyrics quizzes (which I assume those who entered had), and a taste in music which overlapped closely with this compilation:

[livejournal.com profile] narenek 2
[livejournal.com profile] _corpse 5
[livejournal.com profile] lanfykins 5
[livejournal.com profile] satyrica 5
[livejournal.com profile] white_hart 5
[livejournal.com profile] beckyl 6
[livejournal.com profile] liriselei 6
[livejournal.com profile] purple_pen 6
[livejournal.com profile] verlaine 6
[livejournal.com profile] broadmeadow 7
[livejournal.com profile] beckyc 10
[livejournal.com profile] cuthbertcross 10
[livejournal.com profile] phlebas 12

However, the winner, whose musical taste most closely resembles that of a teenage girl in the early nineties is:

[livejournal.com profile] zotz 19

So, in accordance with the rules: everyone award him lots of kudos, and look at him a bit funny.

The number in square brackets is the number of people who correctly guessed the song title (whatever they said for the artist).

1. Get out of here, boy, or I'll use the colt. No chance, no chance.
Shiny Shiny - Haysi Fantayzee [0]
No, I don't know much about this band either. I borrowed an album of theirs once; I reckon this is probably the second most obscure song on here. Such choice quotes as "I'm a hot retard. Margis de Sade." could also have represetented this song. I fear it may not be any cop at all.

2. Six sides to every lie I say, it's that American voice again.
Six Different Ways - The Cure [0]
This comes off the rather fine and much forgotten Cure album The Head On The Door. Googling just now, I find that the Counting Crows have covered it - anyone know what that sounds like ?

3. Not a care in the world, my only thought was to stop you from going away.
Where Did Ego? - Magic Bastards [0]
Well, this was the one I said I'd be staggered if anyone got. The Magic Bastards were a band around in Darlington in the early 90s. I've got no lyrics for the song anywhere, and suspect I've probably misheard the lyric - a few turns through the tape in the car, and I suspect it's actually "stop you from going all the way".

4. You had a temper like my jealousy, too hot, too greedy.
Wuthering Heights - Kate Bush [8]
Yup, this is at the beginning of the tape, so was recorded around 1991 or so - apparently way before China Drum did their wonderful, wonderful cover, and certainly before I heard it.

5. The drums quite good, the bass is too loud, and I can't hear the words.
The Sound of the Suburbs - The Members [1]
Would anyone know this song if it weren't for the Sound of the Suburbs compilation ? I doubt it.

6. Dancing like you can't hear the beat and you don't give a further thought to things like feet.
Doing the Unstuck - The Cure [0]
A wonderfully happy-sounding Cure song, which I wanted to put on the tape. Sadly I wasn't paying attention, and forgot to stop Wish at the end of the song, thus it ran on and added...
7. Saturday, wait and Sunday always comes too late.
Friday, I'm in Love - The Cure [11]
Which has never been that high in my estimation. I was, however, too lazy to go back and remove it.

8. But that was once upon a time, now it's a brand new world.
Modern Girl - Meat Loaf [4]
Possibly the only Meat Loaf song I own (and I'd bet money that it's on the same compilation as yours, [livejournal.com profile] satyrica :)

9. You are an ocean wave, my love, crashing at the bow.
Martha's Harbour - All About Eve [6]

10. Take a look where you're livin', you got the Army on the street.
Alternative Ulster - Stiff Little Fingers [1]

11. As the picket lines fell, the industry died.
Deeside - The Alarm [0]
Interesting guesses for this - clearly people were going for "bands most likely to express pro-strike sentiments" :) I copied this off a compilation a friend made, I know practically no Alarm songs. I think I've heard two others, and liked them, so maybe I should check the band out a little.

12. I crack the whip, and you skip, but you deserve it.
Handsome Devil - The Smiths [1]

13. If I start a commotion, I run the risk of losing you and that's worse.
Ever Fallen In Love With Someone (You Shouldn't've Fallen In Love With) - The Buzzcocks [5]
And also winning the prize for Longest Title Ever. I'm faintly surprised there's only one Buzzcocks track on here, to be honest.

14. You walked too far along the street where only rats can run.
The Days of Pearly Spencer - David McWilliams [3]
I'm a bit confused about this song. I think that this is the original, later covered by Marc Almond and possibly others. But [livejournal.com profile] lanfykins' comments lead me to believe I may be wrong, and that this is a cover with an extra verse tacked on. Anyone know ?

15. Your heart is rip-shit.
Is She Weird? - The Pixies [1]
I reckon that this was one of the hardest to get, since the lyrics are really quite non-obvious.

16. Hearts a-bubble in the rubble, it was love at bomb site
Barbed Wire Love - Stiff Little Fingers [0]

17.But we watch the wall, little darling, while the chemical trucks go by.
Whitecoats - New Model Army via Kipling. [2]

18. Letters I've written him, never meaning to send.
Nights in White Satin - The Dickies [4]
It seems (though I didn't realise it) that the clue was in the lyrics here. The Moody Blues' original version doesn't contain the word "him" in that line. The Dickies' version does.

19. And if the homework brings you down then we'll throw it on the fire and take the car downtown.
Kooks - David Bowie [2]
I expected this to be better known, y'know. If you don't own a copy of Hunky Dory by David Bowie, then go out and buy it immediately (and not in fact Changes as I originally said - that is only accidentally even an album name).

20. Hand in hand is the only way to land, and always the right way round.
Love Cats - The Cure [5]
This is the last Cure song on here. Promise. I would write that I used to be quite a Cure fanatic, but recently [livejournal.com profile] stompyboots introduced me to the concept of what it really means to be a fanatic. So I'll settle for saying I used to like them a lot.

21. Hey, little punk, forget all that junk.
Marc Bolan & T-Rex - Celebrate Summer [0]
I had a schoolfriend who really was a Marc Bolan fanatic, so I know far more about him than I'd ever expect. This song also contains the immortal lyric "Summer's not a bummer, it's a stunner, and it's now!"

22. Curse the music on the radio that the neighbours play.
The Ballad of Bodmin Pill - New Model Army [2]

23. Say baby you been lookin' real good, you know that I remember when we met.
Guns N Roses - Think About you [0]And I thought there were some GNR fans lurking round here, too.

24. I don't need a house that's a showplace, I just feel that we're going no place.
Work is a 4 Letter Word - The Smiths [0]
The Smiths covering Cilla Black. What more could you want ?

25. The me, the you, where are we now ? Allison - The Pixies [1]
Another classic "it makes no sense, must be the Pixies" lyric. Tip o' the hat to [livejournal.com profile] phlebas for showing his working on this one.

26.Hello, speak-up, is there somebody there, these hang-ups are getting me down. Somebody To Shove - Soul Asylum [0]

27. He's bigger than big, taller than tall, quicker than quick, stronger than strong.
Gigantor! - The Dickies [0]
[livejournal.com profile] zotz, I'm disappointed, I thought you were a dead cert for getting this one!

28. Can you squeeze me into an empty page of your diary ?
Hairdesser On Fire - Morrissey [0]
For people wishing to assess critically my tracklisting, this is actually number 10 1/2.

[Poll #370605]

Maybe you've got a point!

Checking my mp3 collection turns up 3 tracks you've included that I don't recognise from the title: Think about you, Sounds of The Suburbs and Doing the Unstuck.

And I didn't tick off the SLF tracks 'cos I'm still getting to grips with them. Feel free to give 'em extra votes if you wish.

So I can now subject [livejournal.com profile] narenek to about 40% of the compilation of a teenage girl of the '90s. Don't know what that'll do for him...

Probably make me tap the furniture and sing along badly to the bits I recognise.
