Lyrics Quizzage
Oct. 20th, 2004 12:52 pmOn the way out to work this morning, I grabbed a new tape to put on in the car. Rather pretentiously titled Nightdreaming, it's a compilation I made up over a few years. The first track was, I think, taped from an LP I borrowed when I was about 14. I suspect that the tape was finished (and titled) while REM's Nightswimming was in the charts, which would date it at just before I went to university.
I've not listened to the tape in a few years, and now it seems full of those awkward moments where you realise that a song you once loved is something you possibly ought to be slightly ashamed of. However: the tape was made years ago, I refuse to be responsible for my lack of musical credibility in the past. Or indeed the present.
Throwing caution to the winds, for your delight, delectation, amusement, whatever, I present a phrase from each song on the tape.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to identify them.
Answers should be posted as comments; I'll be screening them so there shouldn't be any spoilers. One point for the song title, one point for the artist. Note: some of these songs are covers. The point will be given for the artist on my tape. Yes, I am expecting you to be psychic.
The winner will be declared when everyone seems to have got bored of guessing, and will win vast kudos and a slightly funny look. No cheating, where cheating includes but is not limited to googling, searching offline databases, or (if you're a Taoist) wandering over to my desk and picking up the tape box with the tracklisting.
Side 1
1. Get out of here, boy, or I'll use the colt. No chance, no chance
2. Six sides to every lie I say, it's that American voice again.
3. Not a care in the world, my only thought was to stop you from going away.
4. You had a temper like my jealousy, too hot, too greedy.
5. The drums quite good, the bass is too loud, and I can't hear the words.
6. Dancing like you can't hear the beat and you don't give a further thought to things like feet.
7. Saturday, wait and Sunday always comes too late.
8. But that was once upon a time, now it's a brand new world.
9. You are an ocean wave, my love, crashing at the bow.
10. Take a look where you're livin', you got the Army on the street.
11. As the picket lines fell, the industry died.
12. I crack the whip, and you skip, but you deserve it.
Side 2
13. If I start a commotion, I run the risk of losing you and that's worse.
14. You walked too far along the street where only rats can run.
15. Your heart is rip-shit.
16. Hearts a-bubble in the rubble, it was love at bomb site
17. But we watch the wall, little darling, while the chemical trucks go by.
18. Letters I've written him, never meaning to send.
19. And if the homework brings you down then we'll throw it on the fire and take the car downtown.
20. Hand in hand is the only way to land, and always the right way round.
21. Hey, little punk, forget all that junk.
22. Curse the music on the radio that the neighbours play.
23. Say baby you been lookin' real good, you know that I remember when we met.
24. I don't need a house that's a showplace, I just feel that we're going no place.
25. The me, the you, where are we now ?
26. Hello, speak-up, is there somebody there, these hang-ups are getting me down.
27. He's bigger than big, taller than tall, quicker than quick, stronger than strong.
And a bonus track:
28. Can you squeeze me into an empty page of your diary ?
(I've just noted belatedly that that song isn't on the tracklisting, but I'm damn sure it's on the tape somewhere.)
Disclaimers:
I make no claims about the suitableness of these songs for a lyrics quiz. At least one is so unknown that I'll be frankly staggered (and overjoyed) if anyone gets it.
Some songs I haven't been able to find lyrics for, so I've had to guess. If they're wrong, I apologise and am willing to stand corrected. For some songs, googling produces several different versions of the lyrics, again sorry if there are errors.
My guess of the completion date is only a guess, so no grumbling if it turns out some of the songs are later than that.
And just in case anyone's confused, Nightswimming is not one of the tracks on the tape.
