Look out you'll set the jungle alight!

Today seems to be filled with small flashes of childhood. Earlier on, finding there was no jam in the staff room here, I had golden syrup on my toast. Aged about six, one of the things I vowed to do every day when I was a grown up, along with staying up Really Late, was having golden syrup on toast.

Looking at the V&A's website just now, to check which tube station I'm aiming for, I found that the front page of their website currently has a picture of Tippoo's Tiger on it (or see here for an animation). If you'd asked me about Tippoo's Tiger I'd have looked blank - yet seeing a picture reminded me of a trip to the V&A with my godmother, probably when I was about seven. Tippoo's Tiger astounded me; I don't remember at this stage whether it scared me or not. I'm pleased to have remembered it - if I make it to the Encounters exhibition, I'll be looking out for it.

But not tonight. Tonight is Black British Style.

Golden syrup is great. Aged about six (OK, OK, nine) I discovered that golden syrup is a very, very, very bad thing to take to a midnight feast in the tent in the back garden. Especially if you had the type of mum who would check you were OK, because quickly stashing all the goodies in your sleeping bag is a very, very bad idea if one of the goodies is a jar of golden syrup.

Aha! You are not [livejournal.com profile] venta - you are an imposter! You called it golden syrup!

Well, I know that, but stupid people read this journal. And lots of people who'll believe we eat anything in the north. So thought I'd better not leave any doubt in the matter.

We know what it is really :)

(Incidentally, did you get the icon I posted to your LJ address this morning ? Answers like "yes, but it's shite so I'm ignoring you" are acceptable" :)

Shiny icon! Yay - thank you! (I have my LJ mail sent to a completely different account to my "real" mail so me replying in a timely manner is about as likely as, er, a very unlikely thing)

I blushed so much when I saw that film - I had (and still have) a dress just like that one.

I know - I saw you in fancy dress at the Calling once :)

I am confused. I have email notification of a comment left here asking what is it. But the comment no longer seems to be here. Weird. Did its commenter delete it ?

However, the yellow sticky stuff in green tins is treacle. The black sticky stuff in the red tins is black treacle. (For American viewers, I think the closest equivalent is molasses - can anyone confirm/deny this ?)

I have no idea whether this is northern terminology or not. But I figured if I claimed to eat treacle on toast, most people would think of black treacle. And since I've already been accused of having freakish and weird nothern eating habits (condensed milk sandwiches, cheese with fruit cake, etc) nobody would be able to rule out the black-treacle-on-toast idea.

My parents talk about Tippoo's Tiger *all* the time. They constantly accused our cat Kulfi of doing a TT impression.
