Manchmal muss man, um zu siegen, alle Wälle überrennen

I am in a sorry state.

I am listening to a German goth band.
A German "Celtic" goth band.
Who sing in German.
With random bits of plainchant thrown in.
And bagpipes.

And I'm enjoying it.

I'm a fully paid up member of the Society for the Destruction of Highland Pipes (Or At Least Their Relegation to a Distant Place). People playing Scotland the Brave at 22bpm make me really quite homicidal.

I like Nothumbrian and Uillean pipes, but that's because they're not so bloody raucous. Or loud. Or inclined to spew forth Flower of Scotland or Amazing Grace. The trouble is, of course, that on an album with the sound mixed properly, I can't tell what I'm hearing on Subway to Sally. I'm missing the liner notes from the album, and the website just says "bagpipes".

Which is a bit off, really, since it's a .de site, writen in German. And there was me being all smug about knowing the German for bagpipes (Dudelsack), and looking for it, and it just says "bagpipes". Bah.

Dudelsack is a much better word, anyway. We should use it. As [livejournal.com profile] failmaster pointed out earlier: 'bagpipes' sounds far too innocuous. It's like calling weapons-grade anthrax 'lungwimple'.

And anyway. Bagpipes. I ask you.

[livejournal.com profile] snow_leopard, you have a lot to answer for.

Don't blame me blame [livejournal.com profile] mrph he bought me the album!!!

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-04-29 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
You left it in my poor innocent CD player! I had heard about Mrph and his bagpipes, though.

Incidentally: if there is anyone who can act as reliable courier between me and Snow_leopard, who doesn't mind carrying this bagpipe-ridden filth, can they make themselves known, please ?

[identity profile] mrph.livejournal.com 2004-04-29 08:54 am (UTC)(link)
Oh dear. So sorry. Glad you like it. :)

I've been all evangelical about Subway To Sally since I saw them at Leipzig a couple of years back. Not quite so fond of the latest album (Engelskrieger), which has gone a bit Rammstein, but still...

I'll second Mr Fish's mention of Tanzwut, btw. And I'll throw in a Corvus Corax and a Schandmaul for good measure. :)

You'll throw no such dangerous-sounding things around on my LJ :) Schandmaul sounds positively vile.

(I've retreated into listening to Baxendale in terror of the music that's lurking Out There.)

[identity profile] snow-leopard.livejournal.com 2004-04-29 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh oooh ohhh. Why havn't you bought me all this stuff yet? I sense birthday presents!!

[identity profile] davefish.livejournal.com 2004-04-29 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
But bagpipes are great. I like them anyhow, even before I had heard of Subway to Sally, or Tanzwut.

They're even better live, so you should make sure you come over to Leipzig next year :)

I am very very very dubious about bagpipes in rock. Patti Smith got away with it, though, so it can be done.

[identity profile] davefish.livejournal.com 2004-04-29 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
The first time I was exposed to it was during a festival, where I got a full day of it. I'm not sure if I was more bemused or entertained, but it's worth a certain amount of listening to.

Anyhow, a lot of rock involves making a Godawful loud noise. Bagpipes are desinged for that puropse, what more could you want?

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-04-30 01:50 am (UTC)(link)

Nice Godawful loud noise.

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-04-30 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad it's not just me, then :)

By the way, my copy of 69 Love Songs has just arrived, and is fantastic. Thanks for the recommendation. The album seems to be unobtainable in the UK right now, though, I had to order it through the label.

It also refuses to play in my work CD drive without emitting hideous grinding noises - no, the irony of Magnetic Fields upsetting my computer is not lost on me.

Good. They have a new album out today, I think.

Tonight

See your earlier post for directions - any idea when you might turn up?

See reply to your reply to earlier post for answer to that question :)

(Or "about 6ish", if that's OK.)

Could be worse. Could be
A German "Celtic" goth band.
Who sing in Gaelic

Now, that would be rough...

tapadh leat

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-04-29 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there is a track in Latin.

Re: tapadh leat

[identity profile] wimble.livejournal.com 2004-04-29 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I don't know enough about Gaellic. But if they were singing in Welsh, they could spit all over you, while playing on wailing bagpipes...

And you'd Llove it :)

[identity profile] mrph.livejournal.com 2004-04-29 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I can do you a German "speedfolk" goth band.
Who sing in English, with a valiant attempt at an Irish accent...

That'd be Fiddlers Green. :)

[identity profile] davefish.livejournal.com 2004-04-29 10:04 am (UTC)(link)
They were great. Very like the Levellers that had at some point gone slightly awry.

I suppose I should have mentioned that my MP3 server at work had a selection of northumbrian pipe music.... and there's also a half built set in my garage. Shall I burn you a CD?

[identity profile] venta.livejournal.com 2004-04-30 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'm actually quite well served for Northumbrian pipe music, thanks.

Why only half built ? Something gone wrong, or just run out of time/enthusiasm ?

[personal profile] uitlander 2004-04-30 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Why only half built ?

I was making them at evening classes in Newcastle. Oddly enough, there don't seem to be any 'make yer own pipes' classes in Reading :-)

Oi!

[identity profile] inskauldrak.livejournal.com 2004-04-29 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
dinnae 'dis' the pipes lassie!*

In terms of conduit, I'll be in oxford around this time next week (though it'll another week before I see Catt** again) if that's any help.

*insert wild-eyed shaggy bearded scotsman with accompanying accent here.

Are you reliable ?

:)

If I run into you while you're in Oxford I'll pass it on.

Whatever happens, don't listen to the In Extremo cover of "This Corrosion". I did, and I regretted it. :o.
