Happy birthday

I feel I should pause to note here that it's a friend's birthday today; someone I know from church at home.

A few weeks ago, he didn't show up one Sunday morning owing to being rather hungover from an engagement party the previous evening.

Why is this of interest ? Well, it's not bad going. He's a hundred today. As my mother put it, "I hope I can still make myself ill with riotous living when I'm that age."

Next Sunday, he's due to be reading the lessons at the morning service, and will be in the church hall afterwards, dishing out wine and chatting. I can't be there, so I'll say it now:

Happy birthday, Mr Barnett.

That's class.

I want to grow old disgracefully to.

"Where's granddad?"

"Oh he was out clubbing with the other goths to celebrate his 100th birthday and he's got a hang over. I'd leave him alone...."

The secret of Mr Barnett's long life? Well. I heard the speech at his birthday lunch. He says it's all down to OP (ask Liz what that is). Liz's Mum.

Oi! Liz! What's OP?

OP = Old Peculier, as brewed by Theakston. Best drunk with the aid of a knife and fork.

Oh. Yeah, that'd do it. Or do something at least :)
