Er, yes. I did think that last night actually, but then forgot it again. To be honest, I do think that even hand-made stuff (not just weapons) today does suffer from the idea that the only bits you have to make look nice are the bits that are on show, though.
Some of the weapony was for use, not just ornament. But yes, I imagine the plebs still got fairly plain fare.
