Things that make you go...

I've seen various discussions on this and other LJs (and occasionally, seditiously, had real conversations) about "Songs that make you X", for various values of X.

We had songs that make you want to dance, a while back (in my case Another Girl Another Planet is still the top favourite, I think) and songs that make you happy (pretty much anything by Helen Love). I've heard people talking about songs that make you cry (I'm not telling you), and songs that fill you with righteous anger (they're usually talking about Rage Against the Machine, closest I can manage to that is Tonight, Tonight by the Smashing Pumpkins).

However, today: songs that make you relax. I occasionally meet these, my favourite for some time has been Mercury Rev's Goddess on a Hiway, though I haven't heard it in ages. I certainly have, in the past, put on that album in an effort to make a headache go away, and been successful. Today I found another... just a few notes of the intro, and I immediately felt a certain amount of tension just leave. The Cure's Fire in Cairo - a song I've liked for a long time, but never really noticed it having this effect before.

Anyone else ?

Various tunes make me relax in different ways, but to just plain unwind: Miles Davis/Gil Evans' version of Summertime

(Closest thing I've got to a 'music' icon, not necessarily a vote for Tori in the relaxing music stakes. Although I do find some of her stuff relaxing.)

I have no particular comments to make, except that I have Deserter's Songs in the car at the moment, and you've now inspired me to play it on my way home :-) Thank you!

It's a little* obvious but the Cocteau Twins or Sigur Ros are the most relaxing bands I know of.

* Oh alright, glaringly predictable is the correct phrase.

Bit of a cliche, but 'Teardrop' by Massive Attack. Ever since [livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy nominated it for the MillenniumCon album I've somehow associated its sound with holidays and flopping around on the sofa with alcoholic things.

Speaking of which... I believe I still don't have a functioning copy of that!

Is that the one that I still don't have a functioning copy of either?

Swizz or what...?

Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley.

A song that can make you cry, relax, feel angry or uplifted.
An ultimate accomplishment. A different emphasis every time you listen.

Dunno about songs that make me relax, but pretty much anything by the Cure will make me angry. I have no idea why. (one song is normally OK, but much more than that and things turn nasty)

This could be such a long list. However, my favourite piece to just relax to is Moments in Love by The Art of Noise. This track has loads of variants, but the one variously described as "Three Fingers Of Love" and "Love Beat" is my favourite.

A copy on its way to your mailbox.
