I wrote to the 'reader's editor' of The Guardian years ago to ask when they would institute a tabloid edition, but was rebuffed. Media Guardian, therefore, bitched about The Independent's decision, claiming that it's a desperate gimmick when their sales are the lowest of any national paper.
Apparently the tabloid alternative is only available inside the M25. I can't think of a single advantage of broadsheets.
